Soc Trang - The Head of the Tran De Fishing Port Loading and unloading Union committed to providing lifelong subsidies to the parents of workers who died in a work accident.

On June 11, a work accident occurred at Tran De Fishing Port (Tran De District, Soc Trang Province) causing the death of Mr. Nguyen Toan Phuc (1993) in Trung Binh Commune, a worker of the Fishing Port Drafting Union.

According to initial information, while operating a ice cream grinder at the port, Phuc suddenly slipped and got caught in the operating machine system. The fall crushed his right leg to the sides. Although he was taken to Soc Trang General Hospital for emergency treatment, Phuc did not survive due to excessive blood loss.

Mr. Nguyen Van Chien, Phuc's father, said that his family has no land and makes a living as a freelancer. Phuc is the second child, formerly a bricklayer in Long An province. After the COVID-19 pandemic, Phuc returned to his hometown and worked at Tran De Fishing Port for about 2 years, with an average income of 300,000 - 500,000 VND/day, depending on the workload. The family is currently living in a small house built with help from relatives and a loan.

"Phuc went to work because he wanted to take care of his family. I currently work as a lake worker in Ho Chi Minh City, while my wife is often sick so I stay at home. Now that my child is gone, I plan to quit my job to go home and take care of her. The couple raised chickens and ducks to survive" - Mr. Chien choked up.

Mr. Quang Duc Danh - Deputy Director of the Tran De Fishing Port Management Board said that immediately after the incident, the Management Board coordinated with the Union to grasp the situation and deploy measures to support the victim's family.

"Up to now, the Head of the Loading and unloading Team has been responsible for all funeral expenses, including coffins and accompanying services with a total cost of about 22 million VND; support 20 million VND in cash for funeral arrangements and 10 million VND in emergency expenses at the hospital" Mr. Danh informed.

In particular, the Head of the assigned Group committed to supporting Phuc's parents with a subsidy of 1 million VND/month/month until the end of their lives, to help the family overcome the difficult period after the loss.

Mr. Danh commented that this was an "inconvenient, beyond everyone's wishes" incident. The ice grinder at the fishing port has been used for nearly 10 years and has never had any accidents. This device has many advantages such as fast operation speed, low labor requirements and high safety. However, the recent accident shows that there are still potential risks that need to be noted and prevented.

"After the incident, the Port Management Board will coordinate with the Tran De District Labor Federation to ask for the opinion of the Provincial Labor Federation to organize training on labor safety for all union workers and laborers working at enterprises in the port, so that everyone has knowledge to prevent labor accidents," Mr. Danh added.

Immediately after the incident, leaders of the Soc Trang Provincial Federation of Labor and Tran De District also visited, expressed condolences, encouraged and supported the victim's family with 6 million VND.

The Tran De Fishing Port Loading and unloading Union currently has over 120 workers, divided into 5 working groups. The union has made an important contribution to the logistics of the fishing industry and solving employment for local workers. Taking advantage of many resources, the Tran De District Labor Federation also supported gifts and Trade Union Shelters. The No. 5 pickling team also supports 3 meals/day; gives gifts to members of the team during the Lunar New Year. People in difficult circumstances are also given loans to build houses or buy motorbikes as a means of transportation.
