Warning of serious accidents when working with machinery

Hoàng Xuyến |

Accidents when working with machinery can cause serious injury. Workers need to comply with safety and equip themselves with protective gear to prevent risks.

Many workplace accidents

Patient N.V.K (Phu Tho), a carpenter, unfortunately got caught in his left hand by the saw blade while working. After being given first aid at a medical facility, the patient was transferred to the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases.

Through examination, doctors recorded that fingers II, III and IV of the left hand were almost severed, leaving only a small skin bridge but not enough to ensure blood supply. Three fingers were pale due to anemia, broken bones, crushed soft tissues, tendons, blood vessels and nerves were all damaged.

Doctors quickly performed surgery. The surgery lasted about 7 hours. After about 1 week, all 3 connected fingers still maintained stable condition.

Only 2 days after receiving the patient, doctors continued to treat patient D. B. M (Nghe An). During his time working as a motorbike taxi driver in Hanoi, he received additional transportation work. When transporting the elevator, his right hand was unfortunately clamp between the floor and the elevator system, causing damage to fingers II, III, IV and V.

Unlike the first case, the patient's fingers were not completely severed but still had a part of the skin and tissue on the back of the hand held to the hand. However, the fingers were pale and bloody.

After receiving it, doctors quickly performed surgery, discovering that the blood vessels feeding the finger were bruised and blocked in many locations. The damaged blood vessels were removed, then blood vessels and related structures were restored to restore circulation. After surgery, the fingers were preserved, maintaining stable circulation and continuing to be monitored.

MSc.BSNT Nguyen Ngoc Linh - Department of Plastic Surgery, Aesthetics and Interdisciplinary, Central Tropical Diseases Hospital - said that the common point of the 2 cases is that trauma causes simultaneous damage to bones, tendons, blood vessels, nerves and hand soft tissue. If blood flow to the fingers cannot be restored in the appropriate time, the tissue will continue to lack blood, increasing the risk of necrosis and finger loss.

Equip protective equipment, proactively prevent labor accidents

Dr. Duong Manh Chien - in charge of the Department of Plastic Surgery, Aesthetics and Interdisciplinary Surgery, Central Tropical Diseases Hospital - said that when a patient has a workplace accident, the first thing to do is to give first aid as soon as possible, bandage, fix, reduce pain and use necessary medications such as infection prevention, tetanus.

After that, patients need to be comprehensively assessed on the spot and throughout the body. In cases of falls and impacts, medical staff need to pay attention to assessing the risk of traumatic brain injury, spine, chest injury... to avoid missing injuries.

According to Dr. Chien, occupational accidents have many different forms, but cases requiring emergency hospitalization often have severe injuries, the risk of leaving sequelae, even disability, affecting the ability to return to normal life and work.

To limit accidents, workers need to be fully equipped with knowledge about labor safety and use appropriate protective equipment for each job. Newcomers who are not familiar with equipment and machinery need to be especially careful. Accidents can also occur at the end of the working shift when workers are tired and lose concentration" - Dr. Duong Manh Chien said.

In addition, employees need to pay attention to their health status during work. When tired, they should rest, avoid trying to continue working, leading to loss of concentration and errors. Employers also need to proactively arrange reasonable rest time, not forcing employees to work when they are overworked.
