When the landlord sympathizes with the workers
As usual, at the end of the year, Mr. Nguyen Van Thang (landlord in Ninh Kieu District, Can Tho City) considers reducing room rents to support workers during Tet. It is known that his row of 15 rooms is rented mainly by workers and laborers far from home. The rental price is only average, ranging from 1.1 to 1.8 million VND/month.
This December, Mr. Thang decided to reduce the rent by 200,000 VND for households renting with families, and not collect electricity and water bills for workers living alone. He plans to buy some more gifts and cakes to send to workers returning home for Tet next December.
“I used to be a worker so I understand their difficulties. During Tet, they have to buy and spend a lot of money. They have rented for a long time so I consider them relatives and family members so I reduce the rent to partly support them and partly to make them stay in my rental house for a long time,” Mr. Thang said.
Having just received a 200,000 VND reduction in room rent, Ms. Le Thi Thuy (a worker at a garment company in Can Tho City) is excited because she can save some money to buy candy for her children. “A few years ago, due to the pandemic, the company was in trouble and had to cut jobs, until Tet, the landlord reduced the room rent a lot to support the workers. This year, the job is stable and the landlord still reduces the rent, I am very happy,” Ms. Thuy said.
Meanwhile, Ms. Nguyen Thi Cam Hong (a worker at Tan Phu Thanh Industrial Park, Hau Giang Province) was also excited when the landlord announced a reduction in room rent according to the Tet holiday. Ms. Hong said: “I rent a room for 1.2 million VND/month, if I come home for Tet and close the room and not stay, it would be a pity. The landlord also announced at the beginning of the month that they will reduce the room rent according to the workers' Tet holiday schedule, so I am very happy.”
Expectation of care policy, Tet bonus
In the last months of the year, along with the excitement of planning for the Tet holiday, workers also expect the company to secure orders, have a good bonus to have more money for shopping expenses, and be motivated to stick with the company.
According to Ms. Hong, her company is expected to have a 9-day Tet holiday. The long break will temporarily cut off her income. She has just been informed by the line manager, encouraging her to try her best, ensure orders are on schedule, and the Tet bonus situation will be positive. Thanks to that, she and her fellow workers will try to work overtime for a full Tet.
In order to effectively take care of union members and workers during the Lunar New Year 2025, the Hau Giang Provincial Federation of Labor has developed a plan to organize many practical activities.
According to the plan, the subjects of care during Tet are all union members and workers, with priority given to union members and workers in especially difficult circumstances, those who have had work accidents, occupational diseases, serious illnesses, natural disasters, storms and floods, reduced working hours, or lost their jobs; union members and workers who have not had the opportunity to return home for Tet for many years...
With the motto "All union members and workers have Tet", Hau Giang Provincial Federation of Labor requires all levels of the local union to review and grasp information about union members in difficult circumstances, promptly mobilize social funds to support gifts such as cash, goods, and give Union Shelters. Especially, support train and bus tickets, arrange vehicles to return to their hometowns to celebrate Tet for workers working far away and unable to return home to celebrate Tet.
In Can Tho, the City Labor Federation has issued a plan and is making efforts to prepare activities to care for union members and workers on the occasion of the Lunar New Year 2025. With the motto "Solidarity and unity so that all union members and workers can have a happy Tet", the city's Labor Union at all levels will effectively organize practical activities to care for the material and spiritual needs of workers so that they can celebrate a joyful, meaningful, warm and united Tet.
