Hai Phong City's trade unions at all levels have spent tens of billions of dong to support workers affected by storm No. 3, ensuring timely and appropriate support.

Timely encouragement and support

On the afternoon of September 17, Mr. Nguyen Dinh Quy (36 years old, a member of the Da Do Irrigation Works Exploitation Company) was moved to receive an emergency loan of 20 million VND from the Fund for Poor Workers of the Hai Phong City Labor Federation (Fund). In 2023, when his house was leaking and deteriorating, Mr. Quy also applied for a loan from the Fund to repair his house.

Recently, storm No. 3 swept through the city, causing the roof of his family's 40m2 house to be blown off, many belongings damaged, and the estimated repair cost is about 30 million VND.

“This amount of money is very meaningful to my family at this time, helping the family quickly repair the roof and stabilize life after the storm. The union is always there when I need it most, that is a great encouragement to me” - Mr. Quy shared.

In addition to Mr. Quy, since storm No. 3 until now, 105 union members in the city have received emergency loans to overcome the consequences of the storm with an amount of more than 4 billion VND from the Poor Workers' Fund of the Hai Phong City Labor Federation.

According to Ms. Tran Thi Nhi - Director of the Capital Assistance Fund - the Fund is still receiving documents, reviewing and assessing cases of union members and employees who need to borrow capital to overcome the consequences of storm No. 3, and is expected to continue to disburse about 10 billion VND. Along with that, the Fund visited and presented gifts to 100 union members who were severely affected by storm No. 3, with a budget of 200 million VND.

According to statistics from the Hai Phong City Labor Federation, storm No. 3 made landfall in Hai Phong, killing 2 workers, injuring 96 workers; nearly 200 houses of workers and laborers in difficult circumstances were severely damaged. A typical case is that of Mr. Trinh Van Thai (worker of the Sole Pressing Department of Aurora Vietnam Shoe Industry Co., Ltd.) whose house had its roof blown off and its walls completely collapsed after storm No. 3.

According to Ms. Dong Thi Phuong - Chairman of the company's Trade Union, Mr. Thai's family is in difficult circumstances. The level 4 house he is living in has collapsed, so Mr. Thai has to stay with relatives.

To encourage workers who were severely affected by the storm, the company and the grassroots union visited and encouraged Mr. Thai, and provided him with 15 million VND in support funds to help him temporarily stabilize his life. In case Mr. Thai needs to repair or rebuild his house, the grassroots union will propose that the higher-level union provide timely support.

15 billion VND to support affected union members

In order to promptly care for and support union members and workers affected by storm No. 3, the Hai Phong City Labor Federation recently issued Plan No. 11/KH-LDLD. Accordingly, the Labor Federation will provide subsidies for union members and workers in difficult circumstances (accidents, serious risks causing severe health damage (disability rate over 30%) due to the impact of the storm; low income (total income not exceeding 12 million VND), workers themselves (wife, husband, children) suffering from serious illness or raising young children; families suffering severe damage due to the impact of storm No. 3 over 100 million VND. The support level is 1.3 million VND/case.

In case of employees having accidents, risks causing health damage (disability rate from 5% - 30%) due to the impact of storm No. 3; low income (total income not exceeding 12 million VND), families suffering damage from storm No. 3 from 50 - 100 million VND; union members missing work for 1 month or more, having no other source of income will be supported with 2 million VND/case.

The Hai Phong City Labor Federation also supported the cost of repairing houses affected by storm No. 3 with a support level of 30,000,000 VND/house from the City Labor Union Shelter Fund.

According to Mr. Nguyen Anh Tuan - Chairman of Hai Phong City Labor Federation, the city Labor Federation plans to spend about 15 billion VND to support workers affected by storm No. 3; visit, encourage and support 1 billion VND for 100 businesses that suffered heavy damage due to the storm. In addition, the city Labor Federation also spent 1.2 billion VND to support workers in the northern mountainous provinces who suffered damage due to floods.
