Activities to care for union members bear the mark of Vietnam Trade Union

Hà Anh |

In recent times, despite many difficulties, trade union activities have continued to make important strides, especially in representing, caring for, and protecting the legitimate and legal rights and interests of union members and workers.

Models of caring for union members and workers continue to be developed and improved, bearing the strong imprint of the Trade Union organization such as "Tet Sum Vay" and "Worker's Month" spreading strongly and deeply to the grassroots.

In the past 5 years, more than 30 million workers and employees have been taken care of under the “Tet Sum Vay” program with a total amount of nearly 28,000 billion VND. The Workers’ Month, implemented together with the Month of Action on occupational safety and hygiene, has visited, encouraged, and given gifts to more than 3.8 million workers and employees in difficult circumstances, workers who have suffered from work-related accidents, occupational diseases, and serious illnesses; honored and organized gratitude to workers with many achievements in production and business with a total amount of thousands of billion VND.

The “Union Shelter” program has helped nearly 14,000 workers build and repair houses with a total support of more than 500 billion VND. Improving the quality of shift meals has become a practical and regular activity of the grassroots trade unions in enterprises, initially building the “Union Meal” model.

The “Union Welfare” program continues to be expanded, periodically reviewed, evaluated, and new partners are added with incentives that directly serve the interests of Union members and employees. Activities to visit and support Union members and employees in difficult circumstances, suffering from serious illnesses, work-related accidents, and occupational diseases are maintained with a total amount of more than 3,600 billion VND.

In particular, when the COVID-19 epidemic broke out, in the face of the unprecedented urgent and difficult situation of the majority of union members and employees, the Presidium of the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor issued and implemented 5 large-scale support packages for union members and employees affected by the epidemic; support to enhance nutrition and equipment for medical staff, frontline forces against the epidemic, workers and employees at enterprises implementing "3 on-site", "1 route 2 destinations"; giving union savings books to children of union members orphaned by COVID-19... with a total support amount of nearly 6,000 billion VND, with more than 10 million beneficiaries.

Faced with the situation where many unions and employees have had their working hours reduced and lost their jobs due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the world political and economic situation from the end of 2022 to mid-2023, in order to share the difficulties with unions and employees, the Presidium of the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor has issued a Resolution on supporting unions and employees whose working hours have been reduced or whose labor contracts have been terminated due to businesses cutting orders until the end of 2023.

According to the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor, 99,539 employees whose working hours have been reduced or whose labor contracts have been terminated due to businesses cutting or reducing orders have received support from the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor with more than 141 billion VND.

The Presidium of the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor issued Guidelines for organizing "Union Meals" in 2024 simultaneously at all levels of unions to effectively care for the material and spiritual lives of union members and employees, aiming to build long-term welfare programs for union members and employees. As a result, over 15,000 union branches have coordinated to organize "Union Meals" for over 3.1 million union members and employees, with a total amount of over 128 billion VND.

Storm No. 3 (Storm Yagi) has caused severe damage to people and property in the northern provinces and cities of our country. Responding to the call of the Presidium of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front to mobilize support for people to overcome the damage caused by Storm No. 3, the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor has called on and mobilized cadres, union members and workers to support more than 450 billion VND; promptly organized working delegations to directly visit, encourage and give gifts to union members and workers in localities that suffered heavy damage.
