The hard life of making a living has forced many workers to temporarily put aside their dream of a spacious home. However, amidst the many difficulties, the Trade Union Shelter program has become a beacon, bringing sharing and realizing the dream house for many families of union members and workers.

Worrying about money

In the bustling flow of life to make a living, Mr. Ly Minh Duyen - a worker at Hamaco Hau Giang Concrete Company Limited (Can Tho City) - always works hard with the simple dream of contributing enough money to repair an old, dilapidated, and degraded house.

However, as the main breadwinner in the family, Mr. Duyen has to face many worries, from his elderly mother who is often sick, his sister who has a mental illness to his young grandchild with poor intellectual development. Just like that, day by day, the dream of a decent home is gradually left behind with the burden of money and provisions.

"Dream about a spacious, sturdy house so that the whole family can feel secure in the rain, avoiding the constant sunshine in me. But the worries of life kept getting longer, causing all plans to be temporarily put on hold, Mr. Duyen shared.

Also facing difficulties in housing, Ms. Duong Thi Ngoc - a worker at Minh Phu Hau Giang Seafood Joint Stock Company (Can Tho City) - could not help but choke up when recalling her son's wedding day. "The house has been degraded for 5 years and is very dilapidated. The day my son got married and saw that scene, the hearts of mothers like me were filled with grief. I just told myself to try harder and hope to have money to repair the house soon," Ms. Ngoc said emotionally.

With difficult circumstances, Ms. Ngoc is the main breadwinner in the family. Her husband and son are freelancers, so their income is unstable and not enough to cover their expenses. Faced with the burden of making a living, the entire family of 5 had to squeeze into a dilapidated house. The front walls are unfinished, the surrounding walls are made of corrugated iron and are damaged.

dream come true

The dream of a new home that seemed far away has now become a reality for Mr. Duyen. A spacious Union Shelter was built and handed over at the end of July this year, making him happy and grateful.

The house is not only a place to live but also a reward for one's efforts, and a testament to the concern and care of the Trade Union organization for union members and employees. With a place to live, I can work with peace of mind and continue to contribute to the company and the Trade Union, said the male worker.

The day she returned to her new home, tears of happiness rolled down on Ngoc's cheeks. The female union member emotionally shared that it had been a long time since she had such a good night's sleep. Long nights of worrying or being worried about thunderstorms and winds, everything has now disappeared.

"Since joining the Union, I have been taken care of a lot. The last time he fell while working, having to take 2 consecutive months off, the company's Trade Union also visited and encouraged the hospital. But perhaps the happiest thing for me is to have this shelter. The house is small but the dream of the whole family, the female worker confided.

Since the beginning of the year, the Can Tho City Labor Federation has considered supporting 30 Trade Union Shelters. Of which, there are 27 newly built houses and 3 repaired houses with a total amount of 1.41 billion VND.

Chairwoman of the Can Tho City Labor Federation Le Thi Suong Mai said that in recent times, the Golden Heart Social Charity Fund of the Can Tho Branch of the Trade Union has actively cared for union members and employees in the area through the Trade Union Shelter programs, awarded scholarships to children of union members and employees... After the merger, the area and number of union members and employees in the city were expanded. Accordingly, the Fund Management Board will promote the achieved achievements, continue to care for and support union members and employees in difficult circumstances.
