Many reasons for job hopping
Mr. Dinh Cong Minh works as a stone cutter and grinder for a stone processing workshop in Bac Tu Liem District (Hanoi). The fixed salary is 12 million VND/month, the employer provides accommodation and meals, plus an additional bonus based on the sales department's sales, the total income can be up to 16 million VND/month. However, Mr. Minh still decided to quit his job right after the New Year.
“I have been doing this job for 6 years, and my health has been deteriorating. 2 months ago, due to frequent coughing and body aches, I went to the doctor and he said I had respiratory problems and bone and joint problems due to constantly squatting to drill and chisel… I decided to stop this job, even though I knew that if I quit before Tet, I would lose at least 1 month of salary. I listened to my body and understood that I should stop. I decided to quit my job and return to my hometown. I plan to study to go abroad to work after Tet,” said Mr. Minh.
Ms. Hoang Thi Nga has another reason for changing jobs. Ms. Nga is a general accountant for a company specializing in office equipment and stationery. For the past 4 years, Ms. Nga has rented a house in Dong Da district (Hanoi) for convenience because the company is located on Dai Co Viet street (Hai Ba Trung district), 1.5 km away from the rented house.
From January 1, 2025, Ms. Nga's company moved its headquarters to Long Bien district, 8km away from where she is renting a room. Although she regrets her current job, Ms. Nga said she decided to quit her job at the same time the company moved its headquarters for two reasons. First, her younger brother is a student at a university in Ha Dong district, currently living in a dormitory, she wants to rent a house near her brother's university to live with him. Second, she has found a new job, the company is headquartered on Nguyen Van Loc street, only 1km away from her younger brother's school.
“I asked for a room to rent and the price was more expensive than the one I was renting now, but if it could accommodate two sisters, the price was acceptable. Maybe after a while, I will find another room to rent that is more reasonable,” said Ms. Nga.
Ms. Nga also expressed regret at losing her Lunar New Year bonus, but according to her, "there is no other way".
Circumspect
Mr. Vu Quang Thanh - Deputy Director of Hanoi Employment Service Center said that workers who change jobs near Tet should be cautious and carefully consider the pros and cons.
Mr. Thanh provided more information, the expected recruitment demand in the fourth quarter of 2024 of enterprises in Hanoi is about 120,000 - 150,000 workers, focusing mainly on sales staff, production workers, electronic component assembly workers, construction workers...
“It is forecasted that some industries will have high recruitment demand in the next period, including: Electronic product manufacturing (up about 4% compared to the previous quarter); Wholesale and retail (up about 7% compared to the previous quarter); Information technology (up about 7.5% compared to the previous quarter); Real estate business activities (up about 5% compared to the previous quarter). However, there will be some industries that are forecasted to have a decrease in employment due to a shortage of orders, such as: Textiles, footwear (down about 0.5% compared to the previous quarter); Manufacturing of rubber and plastic products (down about 0.8% compared to the previous quarter),” Mr. Vu Quang Thanh warned.
The third quarter of 2024 also marked the first time the capital's labor force participation rate increased slightly after a series of consecutive decreases, showing that some workers who were not participating in economic activities have returned to the labor market. The number of workers registering for unemployment insurance decreased at the same time as the unemployment rate, the rate of workers below potential decreased sharply and increased sharply in the second quarter, showing that policies to support market regulation are effective. However, under the pressure of competition in the market, many workers have to accept jobs with lower skills than their abilities, and some low-skilled workers will even have to move to markets in other provinces and cities with lower competition and costs.
