Creating a "shield" to protect workers in mountainous areas

Đoàn Mến |

In factories, production workshops or mineral exploitation areas in Lao Cai, labor safety is being prioritized. Training sessions, surprise inspections and the companionship of trade unions are contributing to building a "shield" to protect workers in a potentially risky working environment.

At 7 am, at the processing workshop of the YBB Carbonate Calcium Joint Venture Company in the Southern Industrial Park, the sound of machinery has echoed non-stop. Before starting the production shift, nearly 60 workers gathered to listen to the dissemination of labor safety procedures, check masks, dustproof glasses, gloves and safety belts.

Standing next to the stone crushing line, Mr. Nguyen Van Hoa - a machine operator - said that in the past, many workers often had a subjective mentality because the job was too familiar. However, after training sessions and periodic inspections, workers' awareness has changed significantly.

Working in a dusty environment, with high-capacity machinery, even a small mistake can cause accidents. Now, when the brothers start their shifts, they remind each other to wear full protective gear and check the equipment before operating to avoid risks," Mr. Hoa shared.

According to business representatives, the field of mineral exploitation and processing always poses a high risk of labor unsafety. Therefore, the company maintains a specialized department that regularly reviews machinery systems, checks the working environment and immediately handles risks that may lead to accidents.

Similarly, many production facilities in Lao Cai are also tightening labor safety management procedures, especially at a time when orders are increasing and workers have to work at high intensity. Regulations on labor protection, machinery operation or working in dangerous areas are inspected more frequently to minimize accidents.

Reality shows that most labor accidents occur due to subjectivity or violations of technical procedures. Just one careless operation can leave serious consequences for workers and their families.

During the Action Month on Occupational Safety and Health in 2026, inter-sectoral inspection teams in Lao Cai continuously went to the grassroots level to supervise the implementation of occupational safety regulations at enterprises.

The inspection content focuses on occupational safety training, protective equipment for workers, periodic health check-ups, working environment and the use of machinery with strict safety requirements.

Talking to Lao Dong Newspaper, Mr. Nguyen Van Trong - Director of Lao Cai Provincial Department of Home Affairs emphasized that inspection and supervision work is regularly implemented in high-risk areas such as mining, construction, and industrial production to promptly detect and rectify violations and limit labor accidents. Along with that, promoting propaganda has contributed to raising workers' awareness of self-protection during work.

Mr. Trong said that through inspection, the delegations promptly detected and rectified shortcomings and limitations; and at the same time propagated to raise awareness of compliance with regulations for management staff and employees.

At many businesses, trade union organizations are becoming an important bridge in protecting workers. In addition to propaganda and reminding workers to comply with safety procedures, trade unions also proactively propose to businesses to improve the working environment, supplement protective equipment and strengthen health care regimes for workers working in hazardous environments.

According to Ms. Dinh Thi Hong Lan - Deputy Head of the Trade Union of Industrial Parks of Lao Cai province, what the trade union is most concerned about is how to ensure that each worker returns home safely after work.

Strengthening labor safety supervision is not only aimed at handling violations but more importantly at raising awareness of both businesses and workers about building a safe and sustainable working environment.

Many brothers work in dangerous areas, exposed to noise, dust and high-capacity machinery. We regularly remind and conduct surprise inspections to promptly detect unsafe risks. Just reducing one accident is also reducing a lot of losses for workers' families," Ms. Lan said.
