Apple is making a major change when transferring the Vision Pro M5 device production line from China to Vietnam. This move comes as the US technology company continues to seek to diversify its supply chain, reducing its dependence on the Chinese market.
According to Bloomberg, Vision Pro is the lowest output product line in Apple's hardware portfolio. Therefore, this is considered a suitable choice for testing the shift of production to another country. The information on the packaging of the new version confirms that Vision Pro M5 is assembled in Vietnam.
The Vision Pro M5 model, expected to be available to customers from September 22, has not changed much compared to the previous generation, except upgrading the chip from M2 to M5. However, the most notable thing is the production process, not the design or features.
For many years, Apple has been trying to escape its over-reliance on China. Under the Trump administration, the US has threatened to impose a 25% tariff on Chinese-made goods. Tim Cook helped Apple avoid the first wave of tariffs, but the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic once again showed the risks of focusing production on one country.
As Trump returns to the White House in 2024 and restores tax policy, Apple continues to face great pressure. Diversifying production has become a mandatory requirement. However, if the shift is too fast, the company risks losing its long-standing strategic relationship with Chinese partners.
Therefore, Apple has chosen to gradually expand production in India, Vietnam and possibly Indonesia. These changes, although small, have a significant economic impact. For example, the iPhone supply chain in India has created more than 350,000 jobs in just 5 years.
For Vietnam, Apple has experience in assembling a number of audio devices and accessories before. The addition of Vision Pro M5 to the line in Vietnam shows Apple's growing confidence in its production capacity in the region, while strengthening Vietnam's position on the global technology map.
