The project is implemented by Pico - a subsidiary of virtual reality company of ByteDance, which created the Pico 4 virtual reality glasses. While Pico's previous devices were often considered a copy of the Meta Quest line, the new pair of glasses takes a different direction, being much more compact and lighter.
To achieve this lightness, Pico transfers most of the processing volume to a separate device connected to the kinh via a wire. This is a similar approach to Meta's original Orion AR glasses that were demonstrated at the end of 2024.
The source also revealed that Pico is developing specialized chips to process data from sensors, reducing latency between AR images and real user movement. Although many details have not been announced, ByteDance's device is expected to be quite similar to Meta's new generation mixed reality glasses.
It is not yet clear when and where ByteDance's products will be launched and distributed. Pico glasses are not currently sold in the US and with concerns surrounding TikTok ownership, the possibility of a new device being sold in this market is very low.
