Catching the wave of the times, comprehensive digital transformation with AI

VĂN THẮNG |

2025 will continue to be the key year for digital transformation of Lao Dong Newspaper, in which the top goal of the Lao Dong Newspaper Editorial Board is to apply artificial intelligence (AI) more deeply into the management activities of the editorial office and the working activities of reporters.

AI is no longer a new term to Vietnamese people. If in 2023, AI was mainly in the testing and introduction stage, then by 2024, when it was more deeply integrated into various fields, AI has played a role as a transforming force in the global economy. Every day, hundreds of new AI tools are born and tested, meeting all human work and entertainment needs. AI has also appeared on many electronic devices around us, from smartphones, laptops to TVs, cars and household electronic devices, etc. The development and popularity of AI has become the most perfect condition for anyone to access and use.

Master 100% of AI translation technology

One of the industries that benefits the most from AI is media and journalism. AI helps journalists reduce simple tasks, supports creativity and gives many suggestions in processing content. In addition, AI will help journalists analyze data easily without spending too much time.

Seizing that opportunity, Lao Dong Newspaper has become a pioneer in the system of Vietnamese press agencies applying AI to the digital transformation process.

The year 2024 marks an important turning point for Lao Dong Newspaper in the field of digital transformation and AI application. At the 95th anniversary of the publication of the first issue, Lao Dong Newspaper launched the English version of the Lao Dong Online Newspaper. Articles in the English version will appear simultaneously with the Vietnamese version thanks to AI translation. The language translated by AI will ensure that the criteria are consistent with the political language and the meaning of the sentences.

Lao Dong Newspaper also owns and controls 100% of AI translation technology. Thanks to training and controlling the AI model, translation is not only limited to word-to-word translation but also accurate translation according to grammar and context. Applying AI to article translation has helped Lao Dong Newspaper save dozens of employees. This is an important step for Lao Dong Newspaper on the journey of digital transformation of journalism and reaching international readers.

In addition to the English page, reporters of Lao Dong newspaper are also very active in using AI in their daily professional activities. With one or a few AI tools, a reporter can create the same amount of journalistic products as a group of people if they follow the traditional process. AI tools have significantly supported reporters in their work, thereby shortening the time to write articles and improving the quality of their journalistic products when they are published on the page.

Focus on AI development and application

In 2025, with the further development and popularity of AI, the Editorial Board of Lao Dong Newspaper continues to aim for a comprehensive digital transformation of the newspaper's operations. The focus is on applying AI more deeply to the practical activities of reporters and the administration and user analysis activities of the editorial office.

An important point that the Editorial Board always affirms is that AI will not take away the jobs of reporters. But AI will be a powerful support tool for journalists in creative activities. If journalists and newsrooms do not use AI as a support tool today, they will fall behind their competitors and social networks - platforms that are strongly applying AI to analyze and improve user experience.

Basically, using AI technology requires users to have certain skills and knowledge. Therefore, the Editorial Board will focus on training and guiding reporters and editors to use AI to replace humans in steps such as: analyzing and summarizing text; translating, editing spelling, grammar, and text formatting errors; processing natural language to write some simple content; converting speech to text, transcribing interviews; automatically adding subtitles to videos; converting text to speech, etc.

Staff and reporters of Lao Dong Newspaper will also be trained to use AI in some statistical and synthesis tasks, which if reporters do themselves will take a lot of time and effort. The software's algorithms allow AI to process data quickly and effectively, thereby providing reporters with more materials and tools to create content. Freeing reporters from repetitive, sequential tasks will help them perform their work faster, more productively, and especially focus more on creating "original content".

In particular, in the production of multimedia products, Lao Dong Newspaper will continue to promote the application of AI to support reporters in a number of specialized tasks such as making videos, graphics; collecting and analyzing data; suggesting ways to title; making film scripts, reports; reading commentary for videos; producing short videos with simple content entirely by AI; analyzing data to produce infographics with just one click; analyzing data to create charts, illustrative graphs;... AI will be a powerful assistant for journalists in visualizing data, analyzing images, automatically writing content, creating news articles from available data, thereby improving the quality of content and form of multimedia journalism products.

Optimizing the effectiveness of newspaper editorial management

In editorial management, AI will be used by Lao Dong Newspaper to analyze users, optimize keywords, control spelling and grammar errors, as well as manage the newspaper's internal content and documents. This will be the core content that the newspaper invests in and develops to save human resources and optimize the effectiveness of the newspaper's editorial management.

To meet the set plans, at the end of 2024 and the beginning of 2025, Lao Dong Newspaper will continue to invest in implementing phase 2 of the project to build a Multimedia Communication Center, including investing in infrastructure and investing in installing a high-configuration server system to run complex AI processing tasks, thereby helping the newspaper master the technology and optimize AI to adapt to the newspaper's own content and management activities.

With serious, in-depth investment, long-term and systematic development plan, 2025 will continue to be the year that Lao Dong Newspaper changes comprehensively and develops more strongly in journalism activities in general and AI application in journalism in particular, worthy of the newspaper's nearly 100-year age.
