Some Google Maps users report that their Timeline has deleted all history of previously visited locations, as Google's 9to5 discovered earlier this month.
Google has confirmed that the data of some users has actually been deleted and in some cases cannot be restored.
In a notice sent to The Verge, Google spokesperson Genevieve Park said: "We have encountered a short-lived technical problem, causing some users' Time Stream data to be deleted."
According to Google, only those who have enabled the backup mode before are able to restore their Time Stream.
It is known that Google has recently switched to storing Time Stream data directly on devices instead of in the cloud. However, the backup mode is not enabled by default. To activate it, users must access the Time Stream section in the Google Maps application and adjust the settings with the cloud icon there.
This incident has caused some people to lose location history data accumulated over many years.
While some users who have backed up before say they can restore the timestamp, others, especially on Reddit, report that they cannot restore all data even if they try to back up the backup.
