Mr. Chris Phillips, Vice President and CEO in charge of Google Geo, affirmed that AI is not intended to replace teachers, but plays the role of a teaching assistant, helping teachers reduce workload and spend more time connecting with students.
We believe that teachers are always at the center of education. AI exists to support them to work more effectively," Mr. Phillips emphasized at the AI Learning Forum in Delhi, India (held on January 28 local time).
According to him, AI can help students understand concepts deeply, develop critical thinking, spark creativity and review more effectively, especially for students who are struggling to keep up with the curriculum.
Tools like Gemini allow students to ask questions, review lessons, brainstorm ideas and learn at their own pace, even without a teacher by their side.
Google is also promoting multi-media learning, combining images, videos, audio and text to suit many different learning styles.
Phillips cited NotebookLM as an example, a tool that can create audio summaries and presentations from the curriculum, making knowledge absorption easier to understand and more visual.
Some students learn well through images, others need to repeat by sound. AI helps personalize the learning experience for each person," said Mr. Phillips.
Compared to the early stage when AI was only seen as a tool for grammar correction or text rewriting, today's generative AI has gone further, becoming an active learning support platform, encouraging students to ask questions, analyze and understand the nature of the problem, instead of just finding quick answers.
Google is also testing a guided learning method in Socrates style, helping students deepen their knowledge and learn according to their own progress.
This model is being implemented in some schools in India with positive results in improving self-learning capacity.
At the AI Learning Forum, Google announced a series of new educational initiatives, including bringing the mock exam for the JEE university entrance exam to Gemini, one of the most competitive exams in the country.
Google also partnered with PhysicsWallah and Careers360 to ensure that learning content is strictly and realistically censored.
In addition, Google is adding AI Mode in Search, allowing students to create interactive learning guides and tests.
Many new tools for teachers are also introduced, such as Gemini integrating Google Classroom, AI audio-video feedback, Workspace Studio for automating work and AI-generated content testing system.
Regarding concerns that AI may negatively affect children's cognitive development, Mr. Phillips affirmed that Google is deploying AI responsibly, based on educational science, pedagogical standards, protecting student data and controlling access.
Our goal is to promote in-depth learning, train critical thinking and support teachers, because that is a key skill for the future," Mr. Phillips emphasized.
