The American Film Association (MPA) has just sent a letter asking Meta to stop using the term PG-13, after the social media platform announced that teenage users on Instagram are only allowed to watch aged PG-13 content.
MPA said the statement was completely untrue and caused serious misunderstanding. According to the association, their film rating system has been built for decades to ensure reliability, cannot be compared or linked to Meta's content censorship mechanism, which relies heavily on artificial intelligence.
Any dissatisfaction or doubt about Metas automatic content classification system can make the public skeptical about the reliability and reputation of the film rating system built by MPA, MPA emphasized in a letter to Meta.
In response, Meta stated that it has never confirmed that its teenage account is MPA- certified or officially rated PG 13.
Instead, the company relies on the spirit of this system to guide content limitation. Meta believes that the use of the phrase PG-13 is reasonable, to help users better understand the suitability of content.
The controversy between the two sides shows an increasingly clear conflict between traditional censorship standards and AI-powered content adjustment models in the social media era.
