One of the important innovations contributing to the appearance of the smartphone era is 3G, but the technology is now gradually entering the final stage when the 5G era is wide open.
In the US, Verizon cut off 3G connectivity on the last day of December, becoming the last major network operator to do so after AT&T and T-Mobile, according to The Verge.
Verizon has issued many warnings about the network connection going down in 2019, but they have delayed many times, until December 31, 2022. While phones with 3G connectivity will no longer be able to communicate, users of old connectivity can still do two things: 911 call and Verizon customer service.
Although 3G will continue to exist in other countries for some time, 3G services have ended in the US. Part of the reason why network operators are stopping their 3G services is to promote the process of building new networks.
A farewell to a technology
The calling of 3G was also predicted, as what always happens in the technology world. Old technologies must make way for new technologies as they become less useful.
But even when outdated, 3G still deserves a goodbye. Although the first 3G phones began to be launched in the early 2000s, it was not until the smartphone boom in the US that the connection became widely known.
The ability to access photos and music on the go has changed the way we interact with media and web browsing on mobile devices, making it no longer a dedicated phone for businesses. From the first iPhones, 3G has contributed significantly to the development of technology over the past two decades.
