Instagram launched a new messaging feature on December 17. Users can schedule messages by composing a message as usual, then holding down the send button and selecting a specific time. Messages can be scheduled up to 29 days in advance. During the waiting period, Instagram will display a notification like “x messages scheduled.”
This feature is extremely useful for people who want to wish their friends happy birthday on the right day or send reminders like picking them up at the airport. It is also a great solution for people who often deal with messages at night but don't want others to know they are up late.
It's worth noting that Instagram launched this feature before it rolled out scheduled posts and Reels to all users. Currently, that feature is still limited to professional accounts.
In addition to the scheduled message feature, Instagram also added some special tools to welcome the holidays and summarize 2024. Notably, the collage maker on Stories with a year-end theme, such as the "Happy New Year" effect.
Additionally, several new Add Yours templates have been added, including a “How 2024 Starts/How 2024 Ends” format, which allows users to share memories in a fun way. A custom effect will appear when liking year-end Stories.
Instagram is also bringing new fonts and countdown effects to Stories, Reels, and feed posts. Seasonal chat themes like “New Year,” “Chill,” and a Mariah Carey-inspired theme have been added to bring some festive vibes to the app.
Finally, when using holiday-related emojis or phrases like “Happy New Year” or “Hello 2025” in messages or notes before the year ends, users will receive surprise “Easter eggs” from Instagram.
These updates not only make it easier for users to connect with friends, but also create a fun and colorful experience during the New Year transition.
