Apple has just released a new update version of iOS 12 for devices still using this operating system, although the software was launched 8 years ago.
iOS 12.5.8 is now available for iPhone 5s and iPhone 6, meaning Apple continues to maintain support for these two models respectively after 13 years and 12 years since launch. iPhone 5s was introduced in September 2013, while iPhone 6 was launched in September 2014.
According to Apple's release note, iOS 12.5.8 extends the necessary security certificate for features such as iMessage, FaceTime and device activation, helping these services continue to operate after January 2027.
Previously, certificate-dependent functions, including device activation, were at risk of discontinuation when the certificate expired. With the new update, important features on these two old iPhone models will continue to be maintained for many years to come.
The last time iPhone 5s and iPhone 6 received software updates was in January 2023, when Apple released important security patches.
Apple once publicly committed to providing a minimum of 5 years of security updates for iPhones from the time of launch, but in fact, the company often extends support longer to patch serious vulnerabilities.
Apple's update of iOS for devices launched for a very long time shows a rare long-term support strategy in the smartphone industry. Although new features are no longer upgraded, old iPhone users are still guaranteed essential services and basic safety, contributing to extending the device life cycle and reducing the pressure of replacing new devices.
