With the increasingly obvious impacts of artificial intelligence (AI) on the labor market, Meta has announced the restoration of the job list feature on Facebook Marketplace.
Currently, users in the US will be able to access local job opportunities, from job placement to positions in the trade and service industry, directly on this social networking platform.
According to Facebook, the job list will be publicly displayed to all users aged 18 and over.
Users can search for jobs through a dedicated tab on the Marketplace, while filtering results based on criteria such as job category, distance and job type.
In addition to the Marketplace, job opportunities can also appear in local Facebook groups or professional groups, and businesses can also post directly on their pages.
This move comes amid concerns about the wave of layoffs in the technology sector, especially caused by AI.
Many experts warn that AI could cause a large number of low-level positions to disappear in the next few years.
While Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei predicts that 50% of low-level jobs will disappear in the next five years, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang believes that AI will both make some jobs outdated and create new opportunities.
Facebook emphasizes that the goal of the new feature is to make job search easy and convenient, from first-time official work to part-time positions.
This tool also personalizes search results, displaying relevant opportunities based on users' approval history.
In addition, Meta also provides some useful instructions for job seekers, including: contact the employer immediately to ask questions or schedule interviews, learn carefully about the potential employer through their social networking site, and review multiple positions or narrow down the search area to choose the most suitable job.
The feature is only available in the United States, and it is unclear whether Meta plans to expand to other markets. However, bringing the job list back to the Marketplace is considered an important step to support workers amid rapid changes in the AI-powered job market.
