Meta has just confirmed that it will officially stop working the independent Messenger application for Mac and Windows on December 15, 2025. After this time, users will not be able to log in or use the application but will be automatically redirected to the Facebook page to continue chatting.
Before closing, Messenger users on their computers will receive notification in the application about the suspension of support. Meta said users have 60 days to continue using the application on their Mac before it is completely blocked, and recommends deleting the application after it is down to avoid errors or data loss.
This move was first discovered by Apple insider and quickly confirmed by Meta. The company said that removing the Messenger desktop app is part of a plan to focus on the web messaging experience and the main Facebook app, helping to better synchronize between platforms.
Meta also recommends that users activate the secure storage feature and set a PIN to protect their conversation history before switching to Messenger on the web. When completed, all messages will be synchronized and accessed on all devices.
This feature can be enabled by accessing Settings → privacy & Security → End-to-end encryption story → message storage → Open safe storage.
Previously, in September 2024, Meta moved Messenger on computers to a web application instead of the original application. The complete termination of desktop versions is considered the next step to simplify the Messenger ecosystem, although it may not be satisfying for some loyal users.
This decision shows that Meta is continuing to restructure the messaging platform, focusing more on multi-device experience and data security, instead of maintaining separate applications for each operating system.
