According to new data released by the analysis company Similarweb, web traffic to OpenAI's ChatGPT has decreased significantly in recent months, contrary to the continuous growth momentum of Gemini, an artificial intelligence chatbot developed by Google. This development reflects the increasingly fierce competition in the global generative AI market.
Specifically, global traffic on both desktops and mobile devices to ChatGPT.com decreased by 9.6% in January 2026 compared to October 2025.
More notably, the average daily traffic to this platform decreased by 22% in just six weeks.
In the period from December 7, 2025 to January 3, 2026, ChatGPT still maintained a level of nearly 200 million visits per day. However, by the end of January, this number had decreased to about 158 million visits/day.
Although still maintaining its position as the world's leading AI chatbot interface, this decline shows signs of stagnation of the platform that once dominated the market.
In the opposite direction, Gemini recorded stable growth. In the same period, Google's chatbot reached an average of 55 - 60 million visits per day, with global traffic market share increasing by 3.3% in December 2025. The gap between the two platforms is therefore gradually narrowing.
Similarweb notes that December is usually a period when online operations are weakened due to holidays. However, ChatGPT's market share loss is not only due to seasonal factors, but also associated with Gemini's increasing appeal since Google launched the upgrade Gemini 3 in November 2025.
This upgrade quickly received positive feedback from the technology community. Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff even publicly announced his switch to using Gemini 3 after many years of attachment to ChatGPT.
In a post on social network X, he described Gemini 3 as an incredible leap forward in inference, speed and image and video processing capabilities.
Gemini's growth is even more noteworthy as Similarweb only measures traffic to the URL, not counting Google's direct distribution advantage through search engines or the Android operating system.
However, ChatGPT still accounts for 64.5% of the global AI chatbot traffic market share, showing that the leading position has not been completely shaken.
Competition pressure has caused worrying signs within OpenAI. In December 2025, CEO Sam Altman is said to have issued a red alert, warning employees about temporary economic difficulties and obstacles after Gemini 3 was launched.
Regarding user experience, data shows that Gemini is creating a deeper level of interaction. Average access time on Gemini reaches 7 minutes and 20 seconds, with 4.3 pages viewed per session. Meanwhile, ChatGPT has an average time of 6 minutes and 32 seconds and 3.8 pages per visit.
Not only ChatGPT and Gemini, the AI chatbot market is witnessing the rise of many other competitors. Grok of xAI recorded 247 million visits in December 2025, almost equal to DeepSeek (282 million visits).
Perplexity.ai also reached nearly 155 million visits, showing that the AI race is entering a period of fiercer competition than ever before.
