Snap Inc. (Snapchat's parent company) has just confirmed plans to lay off about 1,000 employees, equivalent to 16% of the full-time workforce.
This move is said to stem from cost reduction pressure and the strong changes brought about by artificial intelligence (AI).
According to company leaders, advances in AI are helping Snap streamline operations, allowing it to operate with a smaller team.
Notably, more than 65% of Snapchat's new programming code is currently created using AI tools.
In addition, many important tasks are also being assigned to specialized groups in combination with "AI agents", gradually replacing the role of humans in some stages.
As of the end of 2025, Snap has about 5,261 employees. This personnel cut takes place in the context of the entire technology industry undergoing strong restructuring.
According to data from Layoffs. fyi (a website specializing in tracking and compiling data on job losses in the global technology industry), more than 80 technology companies have announced cuts of about 71,440 jobs just this year, showing that AI is reshaping the labor market by automating repetitive jobs.
Not only Snap, many other big players are also shifting to a more streamlined operating model.
Oracle Corporation (an American multinational technology corporation) is said to be planning to cut tens of thousands of jobs globally, of which India alone could affect 11,000 to 12,000 personnel.
Although not disclosing details, analysts believe that this restructuring is aimed at focusing resources on large investments in AI and cloud computing infrastructure.
With Snap, pressure comes not only from technology but also from investors. Funds such as Capital Management are promoting the company to optimize operations and improve financial efficiency. Accordingly, Snap is also temporarily suspending the recruitment of more than 300 vacant positions to control costs.
Snap CEO Evan Spiegel said that cuts could help the company save more than $500 million in annual costs, especially from the second half of this year.
This move comes as Snap prepares to launch a new generation of augmented reality (AR) glasses called "Specs", aimed at general users.
The wave of personnel cuts at Snap and many other technology companies shows a clear trend when AI is not only a supporting tool but is becoming a factor reshaping the entire labor structure.
In that context, businesses are forced to adapt quickly to maintain competitiveness in the new technology era.
