Should you eat fruit for breakfast?
Dr. V. Mohan, a diabetologist and Chairman of the Center for Advanced Diabetes Research at ICMR (India), said that fruits are an excellent source of nutrients, minerals, vitamins and antioxidants. Therefore, it is best to eat fruits in their natural form, such as sliced fruits, instead of fruit juices.
“However, if you have a habit of eating a bowl of fruit early in the morning, with the aim of meeting your daily food intake, you need to pay attention. Because, there are fruits that are high in fiber and have a low glycemic index, but some are not,” said Dr. V. Mohan.
According to Mr. V. Mohan, when eaten together in a bowl, fruits contain a lot of carbohydrates, can be digested easily and release sugar into the blood quickly, causing a sudden increase in blood sugar levels early in the morning.
This increase persists over time and can have unwanted effects on people with diabetes.
This is also why, although carbohydrates in breakfast provide energy, we still have to balance them with protein, good fats and fiber, to help slow down digestion and stabilize blood sugar levels.
Fruits for diabetics
Fruits contain fructose, which is quickly converted to glucose in the body. Therefore, eating too much fruit can increase your blood sugar levels. Choose the right ones, for example: apples, berries and guava because they have a low glycemic index. Pineapple, mango, jackfruit, banana... are examples of fruits with a high glycemic index.
Balancing fruit intake with other foods at meals will help slow the release of sugar.
You can consume more non-starchy vegetables and whole grains. Remember, if you have diabetes, you should eat fruits with a low glycemic index and limit the amount of fruit consumed at each meal.
