How to eat fruits that do not affect uric acid levels

Kiều Vũ |

Many people with high uric acid levels or gout often wonder if eating fruit increases uric acid in the blood.

Fruits are a source of vitamins, minerals, fiber and antioxidants that are beneficial for health, and are also an important part of a healthy diet.

But it is necessary to choose and use it correctly to avoid affecting the process of controlling uric acid.

One of the important principles is to prioritize fresh fruits with low natural sugar content. Although most fruits contain very little purine – a substance that can be converted into uric acid – some are rich in fructose.

When the body metabolizes fructose in large quantities, this process can increase uric acid production. Therefore, people with high uric acid should eat fruits in moderation instead of consuming too much at once.

Fruits such as apples, pears, grapefruits, oranges, strawberries, kiwis and cherries are often considered suitable choices. They are rich in vitamin C, antioxidants and fiber, contributing to metabolism and overall health enhancement. Some studies also show that vitamin C can support the process of uric acid excretion through the kidneys when supplemented in a balanced diet.

Besides choosing the right type of fruit, eating time is also very important. Eating fruit between meals or about 1-2 hours after main meals is recommended by nutritionists.

This helps the body absorb nutrients better, while limiting hyperglycemia. You should not completely replace meals with large amounts of fruit because it can increase the amount of sugar intake into the body.

People with high uric acid should limit canned fruit juices, fruit syrups or smoothies that add a lot of sugar. These products often contain significantly higher sugar content than whole fruits and can increase the risk of metabolic disorders.

Eating whole fruits is still the optimal choice thanks to their fiber content that helps slow down sugar absorption.

People with high uric acid do not need to abstain from fruits completely. The important thing is to choose suitable fruits, eat in reasonable amounts, prioritize fresh whole fruits and combine with a low-purine diet, drink enough water, and exercise regularly.

This approach will help leverage the nutritional benefits of fruits while still supporting effective uric acid control.
