Weekend habits can increase blood sugar

Quang Minh |

Weekends are a time when many people allow themselves to "relax". However, if these changes occur frequently, they can increase blood sugar.

Staying up late, sleeping in

One of the most common changes on weekends is going to bed later. Many people stay up late and then make up for sleep the next morning with the thought that they can completely compensate for sleep deprivation during the week.

However, scientific research shows that the body not only needs enough sleep hours but is also affected by the timing and regularity of sleep.

The habit of staying up very late on Fridays and Saturdays and then sleeping until noon may not be a good choice for the blood sugar regulation process.

Eat more and eat sugary foods

Weekends are also when parties, barbecues, fast food, pastries and soft drinks appear more often.

One or two high-energy meals do not necessarily mean diabetes, but frequent repetition can make it more difficult to control carbohydrate levels and total energy intake.

Unhealthy diet and lack of physical activity are important risk factors for non-communicable diseases, including hyperglycemia.

A healthy diet needs to be based on four principles: sufficient, balanced, moderate and diverse; prioritizing low-processed foods, limiting unhealthy fats, free sugar and salt.

Lack of exercise

After a week of work, many people spend most of the weekend resting, watching movies or using their phones.

Rest is necessary, but sharply reducing exercise levels for many consecutive days may not be beneficial for glucose metabolism.

WHO recommends that adults maintain regular physical activity, with at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise per week. Physical activity along with a healthy diet and maintaining a suitable weight are important measures to help prevent or delay type 2 diabetes.

For people with diabetes, exercise is also an important part of disease control. WHO says that blood glucose control needs to be combined with diet, physical activity and medication when necessary.

Drinking alcohol and beer requires special caution

Weekend gatherings may be accompanied by alcoholic beverages. For people with diabetes, alcohol can make blood sugar control more complex and interact with some medications.
