Avocado is good for health but not everyone should eat a lot
Avocado is a nutritious food, containing healthy fats, fiber and many vitamins. However, according to US-based nutritionist Allison Herries, the risk of adverse reactions when eating avocado depends on your health, your intake and the medications you are taking.
One of the most noticeable interactions is with the blood thinnaker warfarin. Avocado contains vitamin K, which can reduce the effectiveness of the drug if eaten too much or not stable in intake. People who are receiving warfarin treatment should maintain a stable vitamin K intake and consult a doctor before changing their diet, Herries recommends.
Not only anticoagulants, avocados can also affect people who are taking blood pressure or cardiovascular medications such as enzyme inhibitors (ACE) or angiotensin II (ARB) stolen receptors. These drugs increase the ability to retain potassium, while avocados are rich in this mineral. When combined with bananas, potatoes, spinach or salmon, the amount of potassium in the blood can increase, leading to arrhythmia or kidney damage in people with underlying diseases.
Be careful with fermented foods and refined grains
One thing that few people know is that overripe avocado contains a lot of tyramine, a natural compound that can cause high blood pressure in people taking MAO (MAOI) inhibitors or some particular antibiotics. If you are taking MAOI, you should avoid eating overripe butter or combine it with foods rich in tyramine such as long-term cheese, red wine, salted meat or coffee, Ms. Herries emphasized.
In addition, eating avocado with refined grains such as white bread, white rice or white flour is not harmful, but it also does not help the body absorb the maximum nutrients. Nutritionists recommend replacing it with brown rice, oats, millet or whole wheat barley to better enjoy the fat and fiber in avocado.
Although it is a beneficial fruit, avocados still need to be used properly. Understanding the interactions between avocado and medicine and food will help you eat well, absorb effectively and protect your health more safely.
