Ms. Hoang Bich Thao, communications and policy advocacy officer, UN Women - a United Nations specialized agency on gender equality and women's empowerment - divides current violence into 4 types: physical, mental, sexual, and economic.

She said gender-based violence is violence directed at a person on the basis of sex, gender, sexual orientation or gender identity. Violence occurs throughout the life course, including types of violence against children such as: child abuse, child sexual abuse, forced marriage...

As for adults, violence includes: violence caused by husband or intimate partner, sexual violence caused by people other than husband or intimate partner, sexual harassment at work, in public places, murder of women...

In Vietnam, there are no overall figures on this type of violence, however the trend seems to be increasing and targeting young people and adolescents.

According to UNICEF's U-Report 2019, 21% of adolescents and young people aged 13-24 have been bullied online.

15.6% of LGBTI+ surveyed have experienced discrimination and cyberbullying in the past 12 months.

Experts say that the challenge in dealing with gender-based violence online and on technological media is due to: the rapid development of information technology, the incomplete definition of violence in cyberspace, the lack of rules of conduct on social networks...

With recommendations for comprehensive prevention and response strategies to gender-based violence, experts say it is necessary to: Change harmful social norms and gender stereotypes, integrate online violence prevention and cyber safety programs into existing prevention programs,...

Experts also said that there should be a comprehensive response program, integrated into gender-based violence response programs, promoting cooperation to provide essential multi-sectoral services for victims of violence...

Each individual also needs to take action to prevent gender-based violence such as: Improving your own knowledge, ensuring your social media accounts do not have violent or hateful comments, consulting experts...
