Here are some causes of pelvic pain in women, according to obstetrician-gynecologist Dr. Chetna Jain.
- Ovarian cyst
Some cysts are harmless, but if they rupture or twist they can cause sharp, localized pain in the pelvic area.
- Pelvic inflammatory disease
Pelvic inflammatory disease can lead to severe pelvic pain, fever, and unusual vaginal discharge.
- Endometriosis
Endometriosis causes inflammation, pelvic pain and even infertility.
- Menstrual cramps
Menstrual cramps cause discomfort and pain in the pelvic area and usually go away after a few days.
- Uterine fibroids
Uterine fibroids can cause pain in the pelvic area as well as pressure and heavy bleeding, especially if they are large.
- Urinary tract infection
Urinary tract infections often result in pelvic discomfort, along with symptoms such as painful urination, urgency, and fever.
- Irritable bowel syndrome
This is a functional gastrointestinal disorder that affects the large intestine, which can cause abdominal cramps, bloating, diarrhea, constipation, and pelvic pain.
- Chronic constipation
Chronic constipation can cause pelvic pain because the large intestine stretches and puts pressure on nearby organs.
- Ectopic pregnancy
Ectopic pregnancy can cause severe pelvic pain.
- Pelvic organ prolapse
Pelvic organ prolapse can cause discomfort, pain, and increased pressure in the pelvic area.
- Endometrial hyperplasia
Endometrial hyperplasia can cause heavy menstrual bleeding, abnormal bleeding, and pelvic discomfort.
- Cancer
Pelvic pain associated with cancer is often persistent and may get worse over time, accompanied by symptoms such as bloating, weight loss, and changes in bowel or bladder habits.
