Discussing self-learning in the GenAI era (tentatively translated as generative artificial intelligence), Dr. Le Truong Tung - Chairman of the Board of Directors of FPT University - commented that in the current context, AI technology is developing at a very fast pace, we cannot even imagine what the future will look like, this poses challenges.
When ChatGPT was launched in late 2022, followed by a series of other tools developed, it was like an explosion; that is, AI from a scientific field has become popular and related to all fields and jobs.
Dr. Le Truong Tung cited a social media post by Associate Professor Dr. Do Van Dung - former Principal of Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education - about the midterm exam results of two exams of a graduate class. With the difficulty of the exam in the two exams being similar, the first time, the student used ChatGPT to solve the exam, the result was almost absolute. The second time, the student took the exam without using ChatGPT, the result accurately reflected the student's ability.
Dr. Le Truong Tung believes that education will have to change greatly, meaning that it cannot be taught and learned in the old way when AI is widely used; some professions may change, may disappear, but education will continue to exist, because education is a tool for society to have a way to respond to AI.
The implications of GenAI will have a profound impact on education; whether we like it or not, educators, lecturers, teachers, and students will have to learn how to interact effectively with AI.
For homework, teachers cannot assign homework like before, because students will use AI and use it very quickly to solve the homework, or if students are lazy to use AI and ask their parents, the parents will also use AI.
Therefore, before assigning homework to students, teachers need to use AI to solve the problem and determine whether this assignment should be assigned to students in the GenAI era.
Dr. Le Truong Tung gave a special suggestion for high school teachers, by applying the classic model of "flipped classroom" to be able to both use and deal with AI. "Flipped classroom" is understood that instead of teachers lecturing in class, students will study by themselves with the help of AI at home, and instead of students doing homework at home, teachers will give them homework in class.
However, with this model, teachers need to ask students to make the most of ChatGPT at home with supporting platforms to prepare and study by themselves. For content that is too difficult, teachers can teach it in the previous or next lesson before moving on to the exercise solving part.
According to Dr. Le Truong Tung, this is a relatively simple method, teachers can still keep the exercise content the same and only change the order of implementation, thereby being able to manage students who do not use AI when solving exercises in class.
For other sectors such as vocational education, university education..., Dr. Le Truong Tung suggested that teachers need to make changes and try to change teaching activities in the simplest, easiest to apply but effective way, on the basis of accepting information technology, encouraging the use of AI, improving the quality of teaching and learning.
