In recent years, the high school transcript review method has been used by many schools for admission. This is also the method chosen by many candidates to increase their chances of admission.
However, since 2024, many universities have said no to this admission method such as National Economics University, Hanoi University of Science and Technology, Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy,...
This year, Ho Chi Minh City University of Education, Nha Trang University, etc. also plan to completely eliminate the high school transcript admission method.
Mr. Nguyen Van Luc, former teacher at Trinh Phong Secondary School, Khanh Hoa, supports this trend of universities and believes that using high school academic results for university admission is unfair and causes many negative effects.
"Currently, testing and evaluation in localities are carried out according to circulars and instructions of the Ministry of Education and Training. The Ministry does not have tools to strictly manage scores in particular and report card scores in general in high schools. Thus, "beautifying" report cards and "running for scores" in schools is reasonable," Mr. Luc analyzed.
Ms. Luu Thi Ha - teacher at Viet Duc High School (Hanoi) said that diversity in admission methods is inevitable. However, in reality, at many large universities, high school transcripts are only one of the conditions.
"For example, at some schools, students with IELTS certificates must combine with their high school final scores in Math and Literature according to the given floor level, then combine with their high school graduation exam scores to be admitted. Thus, the high school graduation exam is still a screening channel, ensuring that the admission candidates are guaranteed entry" - Ms. Ha analyzed.
According to an expert's perspective, Dr. Le Viet Khuyen - Vice President of the Association of Vietnamese Universities and Colleges, the fact that schools remove admission quotas based on high school transcripts does not reduce the opportunity to enter university or cause disadvantages for students.
"In my observation, currently, the quality of educational institutions in our country is still uneven, so the grading of students at each institution is also different.
Universities using transcripts in their admission methods have led to many negative issues in grading, even the appearance of buying scores. This makes it difficult to verify students' actual abilities. Therefore, if we rely on transcripts to consider university admissions, it will be unfair to students" - Mr. Khuyen frankly said and believed that high school transcripts should only be used as a secondary criterion, supplementing the scores of the high school graduation exam to ensure fairness among candidates.
The Law on Higher Education allows universities to be autonomous in their admissions. According to statistics from the Ministry of Education and Training, schools currently use more than 20 admission methods. Of which, the early admission methods offered by schools are mainly based on academic records, IELTS certificates, etc.
The Ministry of Education and Training has repeatedly acknowledged that early admission has a negative impact on general education at the final stage of this level. Students who are admitted early will not study anymore, which is very harmful. In particular, this practice causes the remaining quota to be low, the scores to be very high, creating inequality in the opportunity to enter good universities.
Therefore, the Ministry of Education and Training said that in the coming time, it may regulate so that the autonomy of schools must be within the framework of regulations, ensuring fairness in enrollment.
