Waiting for instructions on converting points to a common scale

HCMC - This year, schools using many admission methods must convert the scores of the methods to a common scale.

The Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) has just issued Circular 06/2025 amending and supplementing the regulations on university and college admissions for Preschool Education, applicable from 2025.

The new regulation stipulates that universities are allowed to use multiple admission methods for the same program, major, and group of majors at the same time, and must convert the scores of the methods to a common scale, instead of having each standard score for each method.

Nguyen Minh Hoa, a 12th grade student in District 1, expressed concern about this regulation. Minh Hoa said that in addition to the high school graduation exam, she also registered to take the Ho Chi Minh City National University's competency assessment exam to use the admission results to the University of Economics and Law and Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics.

"In recent years, I have found that the competency assessment test is often more difficult than the high school graduation exam, so if we convert it to a scale, it will be difficult to ensure fairness," Minh Hoa said.

This is a concern of some universities. MSc. Cu Xuan Tien - Head of the Admissions and Student Affairs Department of the University of Economics and Law (Ho Chi Minh City National University) said that converting scores is a complicated task, requiring schools to be extremely careful to ensure the rights and fairness of the candidates.

"According to regulations, the conversion of points must be carried out according to the instructions of the ministry, however, it is not clear when there will be new instructions," Mr. Tien wondered.

According to Mr. Tien, the University of Economics and Law has developed a plan to convert the scores, but it is having to meet, collect additional opinions and wait for instructions before announcing them.

Similarly, a person working in admissions in Ho Chi Minh City said that requiring schools to develop a rule for converting scores could lead to a situation where each school has a different way of calculating scores. Therefore, he hopes that the ministry will soon have instructions for schools to implement the conversion of scores, ensuring fairness for candidates.

"Students should not worry or care too much to avoid confusion and confusion. Candidates only need to pay attention to choosing a major or school, preparing well for the exam. When the exam results are available, students just need to apply the formula to get admission scores, he said.
