Ms. Do Huyen Trang (Hanoi) graduated from the Geography Pedagogy Department of Hanoi Pedagogical University and is teaching at the secondary and high school levels.
Ms. Trang is currently studying for a second degree in English. Ms. Trang asked: "After I have a bachelor's degree in English, can I teach English at preschool, primary, secondary and high school levels or do I still need to obtain a corresponding teaching certificate?
The Ministry of Education and Training responded to this issue on the Government Electronic Information Portal as follows:
The standard training level of preschool teachers is: "Having a college degree in pedagogy or higher for preschool teachers" (Point a, Clause 1, Article 72, Law on Education 2019).
The standard training level of primary, secondary and high school teachers is: "Having a bachelor's degree in teacher training or higher for primary, secondary and high school teachers.
In case the subject does not have enough teachers with a bachelor's degree in teacher training, they must have a bachelor's degree in a relevant major and a certificate of pedagogical training" (Point b, Clause 1, Article 72, Law on Education 2019).
In addition, Ms. Do Huyen Trang has a degree in Geography Education and is currently a high school teacher, so she is determined to meet the requirements for pedagogical capacity to teach high school. Therefore, if she has a degree in Geography Education and a bachelor's degree in English, she is determined to have met the standard training level of an English teacher at primary, secondary and high school levels.
However, to be able to teach English at primary, secondary and high school levels, she must be assigned by a competent authority when the locality has a need for English teacher positions at primary, secondary and high school levels.
