On January 16, the Department of Education and Training (DET) of Ba Ria - Vung Tau province announced the list of subjects for the 10th grade entrance exam for the 2025-2026 school year.
Accordingly, English is chosen as the third subject, in addition to compulsory Math and Literature.
Regarding exam time, Literature is an essay test, with a duration of 120 minutes; Math is a combination of multiple-choice and essay tests (multiple-choice tests account for 30%, essay tests account for 70% of the total exam score), with a duration of 120 minutes.
English subject combines multiple choice and written test, the test consists of 2 parts: Multiple choice test accounts for 60% of the total test score done on the multiple choice sheet; and written test (with listening content) accounts for 40% of the total test score done on paper), test time is 60 minutes.
For the entrance exam to Le Quy Don High School for the Gifted, in addition to the three exams above, candidates must take a fourth exam in their desired specialized subject.
Thus, this is the third locality in the country to announce the third subject in the 10th grade entrance exam for the 2025-2026 school year.
In previous years, the Department of Education and Training consulted with the Provincial People's Committee to decide on the admission method, the number of subjects (if admission is by examination), and the method of calculating the admission score. Many provinces and cities doubled the Math and Literature exam scores when calculating the admission score for grade 10.
However, from 2025, according to the new regulations in Circular No. 30/2024/TT-BGDDT, there are 3 methods of admission to grade 10, including: Entrance exam, selection or a combination of entrance exam and selection. The selection of the admission method is under the authority of the locality. With the entrance exam method, the third test is selected by the Department of Education and Training.
The notable new point is that the same third exam subject cannot be chosen for more than 3 consecutive years, starting from the date this circular takes effect.
Some provinces and cities such as Ho Chi Minh City, Khanh Hoa, Tien Giang, and Quang Nam, although not yet announcing an official plan, all plan to choose English as the third subject for the 10th grade entrance exam.
