Nghe An teachers carry shovels to mountains to help schools clear mud

Nghe An - Many schools organize volunteer groups to help schools in mountainous areas clean up mud and overcome the consequences of floods.

After the historic flood at the end of July, dozens of schools in the mountainous communes of Nghe An province were buried in mud and were severely damaged. Faced with that damage, hundreds of teachers from schools in the lowlands have not been afraid of hardship, taking to the streets to support colleagues and students in the flooded areas with the spirit of "school helps schools".

On August 4, at My Ly 2 Primary Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities (My Ly Commune, Nghe An Province), the mud was still nearly 3 meters thick despite more than 10 days after the flood. The flash flood on July 22 damaged the entire campus, official housing and teachers' boarding houses, and swept away many teaching equipment. Principal Tran Sy Ha said: "It is estimated that more than 15,000 m3 of mud and soil need to be cleaned up, not to mention a series of items that need to be repaired before the new school year".

Not only My Ly, many schools in Bac Ly, Tuong Duong, and Con Cuong are also in a similar situation, in which the damage to educational facilities in the whole province alone is estimated at about 49 billion VND. Traffic was broken, and the roads to schools were cut off, making relief and repair work difficult.

Faced with this situation, the Nghe An Department of Education and Training has launched a movement "schools help schools". More than 10 schools in the plains have organized volunteer groups of teachers, bringing Cups, shovels, food and even their hearts to the highlands to help clear mud, repair schools, and give gifts to affected students and teachers.

Responding to the call of the Nghe An Department of Education and Training, Dien Chau 2 High School (Duc Chau Commune, Nghe An Province) organized a group of 16 teachers who traveled 200km directly to Tam Quang Commune, Tuong Duong Commune to help schools and people overcome the consequences of floods.

The school teachers' belongings include hoes, shovels, protective gear and food, clothes, drinking water, essential items and cash to support students and people in flooded areas.

Similarly, more than 30 teachers of Hung Thinh Kindergarten (Hung Nguyen commune) traveled 100km to support Chi Khe Kindergarten (Con Cuong) which suffered nearly 1 billion VND in damage after the flood. The teachers not only joined hands to clean the school but also donated their own salaries to support friends in flooded areas.

The "school helps schools" movement continues to spread. Many schools such as Que Phong High School, Nguyen Duy Trinh, Nghi Loc 2, Provincial Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities... have organized donations of rice, dried fish, clothes, fish sauce... to send to damaged schools in the West of Nghe An.

Mr. Thai Van Thanh - Director of the Department of Education and Training of Nghe An province - said:

I respectfully acknowledge and commend hundreds of teachers in schools in lowland areas who have not minded the long and hard journey, proactively setting out to support other schools in extremely difficult circumstances. Teachers not only bring gifts, shovels, and food but also carry the deep affection, responsibility, and compassion of teachers.

This movement not only helps schools overcome the consequences of floods to prepare for the new school year, but also contributes to spreading human values, fostering the spirit of solidarity and sharing throughout the industry. Through those specific and meaningful actions, I believe that we are nurturing an education that is not only solid in expertise but also profound in ethics and for humanity.

In recent days, floods and landslides in the North Central and Northern mountainous provinces have killed and left many people missing, houses, schools and maple blossoms were swept away and submerged in mud, affecting local production activities.

"A piece of food when hungry is worth a package when full", with the spirit of mutual love that has always been a beautiful image of the Vietnamese people, the Golden Heart Social Charity Fund calls on domestic and foreign philanthropists to join hands to share with people affected by floods.... to soon stabilize their lives.

The Golden Heart Social Charity Fund would like to sincerely thank the precious feelings of agencies, businesses, and domestic and foreign philanthropists.
