Don't know how to choose the right one
According to the 2018 General Education Program, grade 10 students must study 8 compulsory subjects including: Literature; Math; Foreign Language 1; Physical Education; National Defense and Security Education; Experience and career guidance activities; Local education and History.
In addition to compulsory subjects, students will be able to choose 4 subjects out of 9 subjects including: Geography; Economic and Legal Education; Physics; Chemistry; Biology; Technology; Information Technology; Music; Fine Arts. In addition, students also have to choose different study topics.
Choosing a subject combination helps students focus on their favorite field, while creating a premise for choosing a major in the future. However, it is this diversity that makes many students confused, not knowing which combination is most suitable for them.
Participating in the subject choice consultation at Ten Lo Man High School (Ben Thanh Ward, Ho Chi Minh City), parents Truong Khanh Ha shared: My child studies both Literature and Biology well, but likes Information Technology, so they do not know how to choose a combination for Natural Sciences or Social Sciences. I am worried that if I choose wrongly, I will have difficulty considering university admission or have to take extra classes.
Similarly, Mr. Le Van Thanh ( Chanh Hung Ward, Ho Chi Minh City), whose child was admitted to Ten Lo Man High School, said that no one in his family is currently majoring in engineering or economics, but he wants to become a programmer in the future.
"I just want my child to study with the right abilities, interests and goals" - Mr. Thanh said.
Choosing the wrong combination - long-term consequences
In fact, there have been many cases where students choose the wrong combination, leading to skewed learning or having to take a lot of extra classes.
Mr. Nguyen Hung Khuong - Principal of Ten Lo Man High School - said that in reality, there has been a case of students choosing the wrong combination, not in accordance with their abilities and preferences, leading to having to stop attending university to take the re-examination.Therefore, every year, the school carefully consols students and parents about choosing subject combinations.
In addition to general consultation, the school also organizes individual consultations for each parent and student according to the schedule to ensure that each student and parent has a good grasp of information before completing the application.
According to Mr. Khuong, in the 2025-2026 school year, the school will build 7 hard subject combinations according to the majors: Natural Sciences, Social Sciences and interdisciplinary combinations. The school has flexible soft complexes, suitable for practical teaching organization conditions. Notably, the school added the combination of Physics - Chemistry - Biology, to meet the needs of students with the orientation of pursuing grade A, majors in medicine, biochemistry, engineering, technology, etc.
"Choosing the right combination will help students study effectively, avoiding having to switch between" - Mr. Khuong emphasized.
