corrugated iron classes
An Son Primary School (located on DT 748 road, Long Nguyen ward, Ho Chi Minh City), has a row of old level 4 houses with classrooms for students from grades 1 to 5. In the cramped campus, the school also temporarily built 3 classrooms made of simple corrugated iron. The classrooms are surrounded by corrugated iron, causing a feeling of heat and lack of light. Inside the classroom, most of the desks and chairs were old or damaged.
Opposite this facility is the second facility of An Son Primary School with 3 other corrugated iron classrooms. Every day, students and teachers have to cross the main road to get to class at the second campus. In the morning, students study at campus 2, and at noon, they will return to campus 1 to eat rice and rest. In the afternoon, the students continued to go to campus 2 to study. She and her students had to cross the main road of DT 748, causing parents to worry and feel insecure.
It is known that the school's students are mostly children of workers, parents cannot pick up their children from work for one day and hope that students will study at a boarding school to pick them up in the afternoon. The school held a meeting to collect opinions and parents agreed to contribute more money so that students have space to study 2 sessions/day.
In Tan Dong Hiep ward, Dong An Primary School also has 4 classrooms surrounded by corrugated iron and shabby, making the space stuffy. Each room has 6 fans and low electricity. These are classrooms of grade 4 with about 160 students. Students have to study in a sunny and hot environment, and noisy weather.
Mr. Nguyen Hung (name changed) - the parent of a student said: "Students have to study in corrugated iron classes, which is very disadvantageous for teachers and students. Parents have no other choice because they have to let their children study on the right route".
Continue to wait for the new school construction project
Talking to reporters, Mr. Vo Thanh Nhan - Party Committee Secretary, Chairman of the People's Council of Long Nguyen Ward - said that the reason why students at An Son Primary School have to sit in corrugated iron rooms is because the school is overloaded and lacks classrooms. The ward leaders have directed the addition of tables and chairs to ensure a place for the students to study.
In the long term, the ward has directed units to urgently adjust the plan to implement the bidding for the project to build a new facility for An Son Primary School.
Meanwhile, the leader of the Tan Dong Hiep Ward Party Committee, Ho Chi Minh City said that seeing the students study like that is very heartbreaking. When Tan Dong Hiep ward was newly established, the locality reviewed and found that building a new facility for Dong An Primary School was a very urgent need. Currently, there is a project, the ward hopes to start construction this year.
Mr. Nguyen Thanh Huy - Chairman of Tan Dong Hiep Ward People's Committee informed that in the immediate future, the ward will coordinate to repaint the classroom and equip more machinery in the classrooms for the students. In the long term, there is currently a policy to build a new facility for Dong An Primary School with a total investment of 103.5 billion VND. The school will be built from 2026-2029. Thus, during this time, students still have to study in corrugated iron rooms to wait for the new facility.
At the recent working session with Di An ward, Mr. Tran Luu Quang - Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee - also directed departments and branches to prioritize the arrangement of enough teachers and staff, especially prioritizing the construction of schools for densely populated wards and communes and workers.
125 educational institutions in Ho Chi Minh City are degraded, at risk of insecurity
According to the report of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, currently about 125 educational institutions in the city have seriously degraded items and more than 3,200 classrooms need to be repaired, the funding needed is more than 616 billion VND.
Accordingly, there are 40 kindergartens, 53 primary schools, and 29 secondary schools. The main reason is that these items have been built for a long time (over 20 years). The total review shows that schools are lacking 29,000 sets of desks and chairs, more than 5,600 computers and nearly 3,000 audio-visical equipment (tivi, projectors...). The Department also proposed that the city provide additional funding to purchase basic teaching equipment. Ho Chi Minh City after the merger has more than 2.5 million students and about 3,500 schools.
Previously, Ho Chi Minh City set a goal of building enough 300 classrooms/10,000 people of school age (3-18 years old), ensuring enough space and attendance according to regulations and has reached 297 classrooms/10,000 people. However, after the merger, this number is lower and has only reached 277 classrooms/ten thousand people. Of which, the old Binh Duong area only has 200 classrooms.
