The information was shared at a scientific conference on attracting international students and lecturers to study and work in Ho Chi Minh City held at the University of Technology - Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City on December 5.
Associate Professor Dr. Lai Quoc Dat - Head of the Department of External Relations of the University of Technology cited statistics from the Ministry of Education and Training showing that in the 2023-2024 school year, there will be about 22,000 international students nationwide coming to study and work in our country; on average, each university has about 42 international students. Of which, most come to study language, culture and attend university. He assessed this index as low.
"The target of planning the network of universities in Vietnam by 2020 is expected to reach 3%, equivalent to 66,000 foreign students coming to study, while the actual number is 22,000, only reaching about 30%," Associate Professor Dr. Lai Quoc Dat shared.
At the University of Technology alone, Associate Professor Dr. Lai Quoc Dat said that by 2023, the school had attracted 160 international students, accounting for less than 1% of the total number of students in the school.
According to Mr. Dat, compared to the average number of universities nationwide, the number of international students at the University of Technology is much higher.
To attract international students to study in Ho Chi Minh City, Mr. Dat said that Ho Chi Minh City must become a focal point for coordinating cooperation between universities and businesses, such as creating internship and employment opportunities for international students or supporting the development of university facilities, etc.
In addition, he suggested that Ho Chi Minh City could establish an international student center, which would act as a unit to promote Ho Chi Minh City, promote Ho Chi Minh City universities, and support international students, including in terms of employment.
