Reviving a school worth over 63 billion VND
Vo Chi Cong - Hung Son High School was invested with more than 63 billion VND, built in 2018 in Tay Giang district, former Quang Nam province, serving students in the border highlands. At the end of 2020, a serious landslide behind the school caused hundreds of students and teachers to travel more than 40km to the old district center to study.
Since then, the school worth more than 63 billion VND has been almost abandoned. While the rows of rooms are located in the middle of the mountain, students and teachers have to study and live in temporary conditions, sharing classrooms and accommodation at the borrowed school site.
A Lang Thi Gai said that the temporary school point is more than 40km away from the old school, while the mountain road is dangerous and landslides often occur in the rainy season.
“Previously, we studied far away, so we had to stay in the dormitory area, eating, living, and traveling were all difficult. Now the school is spacious and beautiful, we only hope to study stably here until the end of 12th grade” - Gai shared.
Closing 40-60km school trips
Mr. Nguyen Cong Tuoi - Principal of Vo Chi Cong - Hung Son High School - said that the greatest joy in this school year is that teachers and students have finally returned to the school built for students in border areas.
In the 2026-2027 school year, the school has 252 students, most of whom are children of the Co Tu people in the border communes of Da Nang bordering Laos. "When studying at the temporary point, some students had to go from home to school with a distance of 40-60km. Now that the school has returned to the Hung Son area, the furthest students are only about 20-25km away from the school" - teacher Tuoi said.
Shortened distance not only helps students travel more conveniently. For parents in mountainous areas, children studying near home also means less worry every time it rains heavily, mountain roads are landslides. The school is also more convenient in mobilizing students to go to class, maintaining the number of students, especially for those in difficult circumstances.
More importantly, according to Mr. Tuoi, the landslide prevention dyke system has been invested and completed, creating a basis for teachers, parents and students to feel more secure when returning to school.
In addition to gradually improving accommodation conditions for boarding students, the school is concerned with supplementing contract teachers, equipment, textbooks and teaching conditions.
According to Mr. Van Kiem - Standing Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of Hung Son commune, the reopening of Vo Chi Cong High School is of special significance to students in the border area, especially children of the Co Tu people.
Over the past time, the locality has coordinated with schools, parents and forces in the area to repair and clean classrooms, mobilize students to go to school, and at the same time pay attention to living and studying conditions for students.
Bringing students back to school is only the first step. The locality will continue to accompany the school, taking care of learning and living conditions, especially for students from afar, in difficult circumstances, so that they can feel secure in sticking to school and class. The biggest wish is that this place truly becomes a stable and safe school for children in border areas" - Mr. Kiem shared.
