Tuyen Quang highlands still lack English teachers

Tuyen Quang - Many schools in highland communes of the province are still lacking English teachers, while recruitment is facing many difficulties.

In just nearly 2 months, Son Vi Inter-level Boarding Primary and Secondary School (Son Vi commune) will welcome a new spacious facility, better meeting living and learning conditions. However, teachers and students here are still worried about the shortage of teachers, especially English teachers.

After the merger, in the 2026 - 2027 school year, Son Vi Inter-level Boarding Primary and Secondary School has 31 classes with a total of 1,085 students. With a large number of students, the school currently only has 2 English teachers.

Talking to PV, teacher Tran Van Trung, Son Vi Inter-level Boarding Primary and Secondary School, said that among the 2 existing English teachers, only 1 is in the payroll, and the other is under assignment.

With 2 English teachers, the school still lacks more than 30 lessons per week. To ensure that students learn enough, it is mandatory to increase the number of lectures per week for teachers, which means increasing pressure," teacher Tran Van Trung said.

The school's remedial measure is to find English teachers to sign contracts, but this is not easy for remote, isolated, and border areas like Son Vi.

Teacher Trung said: "Currently, the school is still arranging teaching on Saturdays. With the assigned staff, the school is still short of 15 teachers, we still propose to increase personnel.

With the specific nature of English, we propose recruiting additional staff or transferring redundant positions here to serve teaching.

Meanwhile, at Sung Mang Ethnic Minority Boarding Secondary School (Sung Mang commune), after arrangement and merger, the school has a total of 30 classes with 1,104 students.

Ms. Phan Thi Tam, Principal of Sung Mang Ethnic Minority Boarding Secondary School, said that each week, 1 class learns 3 English lessons, the whole school is 90 lessons, but in reality there is still a shortage of teachers.

Compared to regulations, we are still short of 1 English teacher because 3 branches of the school are far apart, and teachers have many difficulties traveling," Ms. Tam said.

According to the Department of Education and Training of Tuyen Quang province, the shortage of teachers, especially English teachers, is localized, concentrated mostly in highland communes, remote and isolated areas and areas with particularly difficult socio-economic conditions.

The reason for this situation is that the source of teacher recruitment, especially for English and Informatics, is very limited. Mountainous areas are difficult to travel, while income and allowances are not attractive enough to attract young teachers to work long-term in remote, isolated, and border areas.

Talking to PV, Mr. Bui Quang Tri, Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training of Tuyen Quang province, said that in the immediate future, the education sector is implementing the mobilization and assignment of teachers in favorable areas to support difficult areas while waiting to recruit enough targets.

For English, the industry is promoting the application of technology and online teaching, combining direct and online teaching between schools conveniently with schools in difficult areas," Mr. Bui Quang Tri said.

The Department of Education and Training of Tuyen Quang province is continuing to propose supplementing teacher staffing targets suitable to the increase in the number of students in the province.
