100% of urban buses will switch to electric and green energy by 2030

Da Nang - Da Nang City People's Committee officially issued a plan to convert all buses to using electricity and green energy.

On August 6, Da Nang City People's Committee issued a decision approving the Plan to convert fossil fuel-fueled buses to electricity and green energy in the city in the period 2026 - 2050.

Da Nang City aims to complete the conversion of electric and green-energy buses in the entire urban area by 2030, including the administrative boundaries of the old Da Nang city and the area belonging to the old Tam Ky and Hoi An cities.

In which, focus on converting buses operating in urban areas right in the period 2026 - 2030. The conversion rate of inner-city vehicles is expected to reach 40% in 2026 and will be 100% completed in 2027 for routes currently in operation. All new bus routes opened in urban areas from 2026 are also required to use 100% electric or green energy vehicles.

The city government temporarily allows investment in diesel-fueled buses meeting Euro 5 emission standards in the period 2026 - 2030 for routes outside urban areas or routes connecting mountainous and rural areas because the charging station infrastructure does not meet operating conditions. Businesses will implement conversion immediately after the charging station infrastructure in these areas is completed.

Da Nang City will continue to replace all remaining buses in the period 2030 - 2050, striving to complete 100% of the conversion of vehicles using green energy throughout the area by 2050. The city's overall conversion rate is expected to reach 64% by 2030, 80% in the period 2031 - 2035 and 100% in the period 2036 - 2050, and all new bus routes opened in this period must use clean energy.

Da Nang City prioritizes building and perfecting mechanisms and policies to support investment in vehicles and infrastructure serving public passenger transport by bus. Specialized agencies will review and complete the system of norms and unit prices for electric buses, and at the same time adjust the contract time for bus service provision to be consistent with vehicle depreciation time to attract businesses to participate.

The city develops electricity charging station infrastructure and green energy supply through planning and investing in fast charging stations at the starting point and end point of the route and public charging stations. Parking lot and traffic hub planning will integrate land funds for charging stations, accompanied by a common infrastructure technical standard system.

The city prioritizes developing electric bus routes connected to urban railway planning, including the Da Nang - Hoi An - Tam Ky - Chu Lai International Airport route, new urban areas, National Exhibition Fair Center and Museum. Existing bus routes will be reviewed and optimized to suit the technical characteristics of electric vehicles to reduce operating costs.

Da Nang City People's Committee assigned the Department of Construction to be the lead agency to advise, monitor and urge the implementation of the plan. The Department of Finance, the Department of Industry and Trade, the Department of Science and Technology, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and the People's Committees of communes and wards are responsible for coordinating implementation to complete the set roadmap.
