The Thuong Cat bridge project across the Red River was started on the occasion of the 71st anniversary of the Liberation of the Capital (October 10, 1954 - October 10, 2025). Thuong Cat Bridge has a total length of the bridge and the roads at both ends of the bridge of 5.226 km, of which the main bridge length is 780 m; the approach bridge is 3.125 km long; the roads at both ends of the bridge are 1.321 km long. The total investment is more than VND 7,303 billion, using Hanoi City's budget.
The bridge is designed with 8 lanes (6 lanes for motor vehicles and 2 primary lanes), the width of the main bridge is 35 m, the approach bridge is 31 m. The southern approach road has a typical cross-section of 60 m (6 lanes for motor vehicles, 2 primary lanes on the main route and 2 parallel roads). The North approach road has a typical cross-section of 50 m (4 lanes for motor vehicles, 2 parallel roads).
According to the plan approved by the Hanoi People's Committee, the starting point of the project is located at the intersection with Ky Vu Street, Thuong Cat Ward (old Bac Tu Liem District, now Thuong Cat Ward). The end point is at the intersection with Road 23B, in Dai Mach commune, Dong Anh district (old, now Thien Loc commune).
The construction of Thuong Cat Bridge will contribute to ensuring the synchronization and smoothness of the entire Ring Road 3.5; at the same time, reducing traffic congestion on route 70, Ring Road 3 and forming important infrastructure routes in the capital.
Previously, on January 25, 2024, Hanoi City held a ceremony to announce and award the architectural design competition for the Thuong Cat bridge project. The first prize winning plan is called "Peace Ward", with a main bridge consisting of 4 spans, using a cable-stayed structure. The bridge piers are designed to slightly curve to the two sides of the bridge, creating the shape of a rising bird's wing.
The design is inspired by the image of the bird wing in the saying "The land is healthy, the bird is gone", which is both harmonious with the rich ecosystem of the Red River and a global symbol.
