In the days leading up to the Binh Ngo Lunar New Year 2026, at the National Highway 1A repair site passing through Dai Hai commune and Nga Bay ward (Can Tho City), a working atmosphere is taking place urgently. Machinery is operating continuously, workers are working shifts to speed up progress and soon complete the road that was once considered a "black spot" of flooding and traffic unsafety.

At sections Km2106+260–Km2106+550, Km2107+030–Km2108+035 and section Km2100–Km2103+700, the contractor is focusing on raising the roadbed, repairing damaged road surfaces, completing drainage systems and traffic safety signals.
Mr. Le Minh Hieu - Site Commander of Khanh Cuong Co., Ltd. - said that the project was implemented from January 19. Although the material source is still scarce, the unit still mobilized maximum manpower and vehicles, continuously constructed, striving to complete before the Lunar New Year 2026 so that people can travel more conveniently and safely.
According to Lao Dong Newspaper's records, from about October 2025, prolonged heavy rain combined with high tide caused National Highway 1A through Thanh Xuan, Thanh Hoa communes, Nga Bay ward and Dai Hai commune to be frequently deeply flooded, causing traffic difficulties, especially during peak hours. After the water receded, the road surface peeled off, many potholes and craters appeared, posing a potential safety risk. For the section from Nga Bay ward to Ba Rinh bridge (Dai Hai commune), functional agencies had to block off part of the route and organize two-way traffic diversion in the remaining road section.
Mr. Nguyen Manh Tho, residing in Nga Bay ward, shared: "I once witnessed a three-wheeled sand truck overturning, or the scene of a sleeper bus getting stuck in the mud like a "field plow sinking". Now seeing the road being raised and constructed bustlingly, everyone is happy, hoping it will be completed soon to travel safely.
Mr. Tran Van Hung said that in recent days, construction has caused traffic to be inconvenient at times, but people are all in agreement and ready to share. "As long as the road is completed, there are no potholes, no flooding, traveling this Tet will be much safer," Mr. Hung said.
A passenger car driver who regularly travels through this road section said that he is very happy that the road has been upgraded, hoping the project will be put into use soon before Tet so that people can travel more conveniently and safely.

According to the Vietnam Road Administration, the project to repair the roadbed and surface, complete the traffic safety system in sections Km2106+260–Km2106+550, Km2107+030–Km2108+035; repair the traffic safety system in section Km2100+000–Km2103+700, National Highway 1 section through Can Tho City has a total investment of more than 17.6 billion VND. The construction time is about 90 days, including holidays and Tet, starting from January 19.
The project focuses on repairing and upgrading the road surface and longitudinal grooves to prevent flooding; and at the same time completing the traffic safety system, ensuring stable operation of the route and extending the lifespan of the project.
Previously, at the end of 2021, the Ministry of Transport (now the Ministry of Construction) started the project to renovate and upgrade the section from Nga Bay City (Hau Giang province) to Chau Thanh district (Soc Trang province), completed and put into operation from the end of 2023. The project has a total length of nearly 20km, a total investment of more than 1,681 billion VND, a scale of level III delta road, with 4 lanes for motorized vehicles, a design speed of 80km/h. However, the flooding situation in some locations has not been thoroughly improved.
From that reality, the Vietnam Road Administration has reported and proposed to the Ministry of Transport (now the Ministry of Construction) to supplement the list of repairing the roadbed and surface and completing the traffic safety system for some sections on National Highway 1 passing through Can Tho City.
