In the first days of December, farmers in Tuy Loc commune, Yen Bai city focused on taking care of their vegetable fields to supply the market for Tet holiday.
According to Lao Dong's report on January 4, from early morning, people were present in the fields, diligently working on vegetable beds, preparing for the winter crop.
Many types of leafy vegetables and fruit with short growing periods are grown in large quantities to meet year-end consumption needs.
Ms. Ngo Thi Dao (38 years old, Tuy Loc, Yen Bai city) said that farmers started planting 2 months ago, however, the soil is still quite soft and has a lot of alluvium.
"To have a quality vegetable season, from the time of planting, farmers here must closely monitor the growth of the plants. Basically, up to this point, all arising problems can be controlled, the family is confident in bringing the best quality products to the Tet market," said Ms. Dao.
Similarly, in Dai Minh commune, Yen Binh district - considered the capital of royal grapefruit in Yen Bai province, people are also picking each ripe grapefruit and carefully wrapping them in bags.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Tranh (70 years old, Dai Minh, Yen Binh) shared that her family has about 250 grapefruit trees, but almost all of them have been removed from the garden.
"There are still about 1,000 fruits that have not been picked yet, but the owner has purchased them since a month ago. Depending on the grapefruit variety, the price fluctuates differently, for example, the price of green-skin grapefruit is about 8,000 VND/fruit, while Dien grapefruit is about 3,000 VND/fruit cheaper," Ms. Tranh informed.
Not only agricultural products, farmers in Yen Bai province also focus on developing livestock to meet the Tet market.
Mr. Nguyen Van Nam (42 years old, Tuy Loc, Yen Bai city) shared that the recent storm damaged more than 2,500 chickens, the mud flooded the barn so the family could not reuse it.
"The family has made efforts to restore livestock farming and prepare for the upcoming Tet holiday. We have rebuilt the barns, cleaned and disinfected them, selected good breeds, and fully vaccinated them to prevent epidemics. Currently, more than 3,000 black chickens are growing well and are ready to be sold for the 2025 Lunar New Year. We hope to sell them at a good price to make up for the recent losses," Nam shared.
Speaking to Lao Dong, Tuy Loc Commune Chairman Nguyen Anh Tuan said that after storm No. 3, the total damage in the commune was estimated at 90 billion VND. In the Hoa Binh Minh High-Tech Production Center alone, 4,000 pigs died, and the barns were damaged, causing a loss of over 37 billion VND.
"Currently, the commune is actively implementing solutions with the people to restore production. Resolution No. 77 of the Provincial People's Council has provided more motivation for over 800 households with agricultural losses to be supported to restore about 120 hectares of vegetables and crops," informed the Chairman of Tuy Loc commune.
According to statistics from the People's Committee of Yen Bai province, up to now, farmers in the province have grown over 3,900 hectares of various vegetables and about 6,000 hectares of citrus fruit trees that will be harvested before, during and after the Lunar New Year.
The total main livestock herd in the year is estimated at over 883,400 heads, the poultry herd is about 7.8 million heads; the output of fresh meat of all kinds is estimated at 75,880 tons; the output of fresh meat of the main livestock herd is estimated at 59,410 tons.
