On December 31, information from Da Nang City People's Committee said that the city has just issued a Decision approving the Program for research, application of science and technology to develop Ngoc Linh ginseng and medicinal herbs in the city in the period 2026-2035, in order to effectively exploit the potential of medicinal herbs, form a sustainable value chain and enhance economic value for the locality.
The program belongs to the type of city-level science, technology and innovation program, proposed and managed by the Da Nang Department of Science and Technology. The program is built on the basis of major guidelines and policies of the Central Government on science and technology development, innovation, pharmaceutical industry development and Ngoc Linh ginseng development orientation to 2045.
Da Nang identifies Ngoc Linh ginseng as a unique, precious medicinal herb with high economic and pharmaceutical value. However, the research and application of science and technology in breeding, cultivation, preservation and processing in the past has been fragmented, lacking links between large-scale research and production. Therefore, the program is issued to standardize technical procedures, promote the application of high technology, develop deep processed products with clear traceability and meet domestic and international standards.
The general objective of the program is to promote research and application of science and technology to synchronously develop the value chain of Ngoc Linh ginseng products; conserve and sustainably develop precious gene sources; gradually form a safe and high-quality medicinal herb ecosystem; towards exporting key products, contributing to improving income for people and promoting socio-economic development associated with ensuring national defense and security.
The program sets out many specific goals, including focusing on preserving and expanding Ngoc Linh ginseng growing areas and advantageous medicinal herbs; perfecting technical processes according to advanced standards such as GACP-WHO, Organic; developing linkage chains from seeds, farming, processing to consumption; promoting deep processing of high value-added products; applying digital technology in traceability and supply chain management.
Regarding content, the program prioritizes research and application of biotechnology in gene conservation, breed selection; application of IoT, AI in planting area management; development of pharmaceutical products, health protection foods, biological cosmetics from Ngoc Linh ginseng; registration and protection of geographical indications and trademarks; expanding domestic and international consumption markets, linking the development of medicinal herbs with ecotourism and health care.
The program is implemented according to a multi-subject linkage model between state management agencies, research institutes, universities, businesses and people. Implementation costs are guaranteed from the state budget, combined with integrated capital, socialization and other legal sources.
Da Nang City People's Committee expects that, through this program, the city will gradually position itself as a research, application and commercialization center for Ngoc Linh ginseng and medicinal herbs, contributing to preserving precious resources, enhancing economic value and sustainable development in the coming period.
