Industrial production index continues to increase
At the International Forum on Sustainable Development of the Mekong Delta (MD) - SDMD 2024 on November 29 in Can Tho City, Mr. Nguyen Van Thinh - Deputy Director of the Department of Industry and Trade (Ministry of Industry and Trade) - said that in recent times, industrial development in the MD has achieved some outstanding results.
In particular, the industrial production of the Mekong Delta is continuously expanded and developed; the industrial production index (IIP) of the region continues to increase at a higher level compared to the overall average of the whole country in 2022, 2023 and the first 9 months of 2024 is 11.8%;
The restructuring of industrial sectors has gone in the right direction, the processing and manufacturing industry always accounts for a high proportion and continuously increases its proportion. Some products have high growth rates such as: textiles, processed seafood, processed fruits, rice processing, electronics, etc.
In particular, the region's energy sector has developed strongly in recent years and is gradually becoming a national energy center. Investment in the region's industrial sectors focuses mainly on energy projects such as: O Mon 1, O Mon 2, O Mon 3, O Mon 4 Thermal Power Plants, Ca Mau 1 and 2 Gas-fired Thermal Power Plants... Wind power projects have been invested, started, and licensed in the coastal provinces of the delta such as: Bac Lieu 1, 2 and 3 Wind Power Plants, Korea - Tra Vinh Wind Power Plant, Binh Dai - Ben Tre Wind Power Plant, Duyen Hai Wind Power Project, Tra Vinh...
The region's processed industrial and agricultural products rank first in the country in terms of production and export value. The Mekong Delta plays an important role in providing raw fruits for fresh and processed export; with about 13 major export markets, China alone is the largest market accounting for more than 78% of the market share.
Energy development associated with forest and coastal protection
According to Deputy Director of the Department of Industry and Trade of the locality Nguyen Van Thinh, besides the achieved results, industrial development in the Mekong Delta region still has many shortcomings and limitations. In particular, the processing industry has not really developed; the process of technological innovation of enterprises is still slow; investment in infrastructure to develop industrial zones and clusters in the region still has many difficulties and is slow compared to development requirements...
To sustainably develop the Mekong Delta region in the coming period, Deputy Director of the Department of Industry and Trade Nguyen Van Thinh suggested that localities in the region focus on developing agricultural, aquatic and food processing industries in the direction of linking with raw material production areas, diversifying products and expanding consumption markets.
Develop agricultural support industries such as chemical and mechanical products for agriculture and aquaculture. Encourage and promote the development of green industry, clean energy, renewable energy, especially wind power and solar power associated with forest and coastal protection.
Prioritize investment in development and maximum exploitation of established industrial zones and clusters by 2030. Strengthen the development of effective support policies for enterprises to innovate technology, apply advanced science in production, contribute to increasing value and increasing high-tech content in industrial products, increasing productivity, quality and competitiveness of Vietnamese products in domestic and foreign markets.
