On April 7, the working delegation of the Ministry of Industry and Trade led by Deputy Minister Nguyen Hoang Long had a working session with Dien Bien province on the implementation of power source and grid projects in Power Plan VIII.
Currently, Dien Bien is the only locality in the country that does not yet have a 220kV and 500kV voltage transmission grid system, mainly supplied with electricity through 110kV lines.
The rate of households using national grid electricity reached over 96.2%. However, there are still about 6,800 households without access to electricity, concentrated in remote and isolated villages.

In the period 2025 - 2030, according to the adjusted Power Plan VIII, the province plans to invest in a series of key projects including the 500kV Dien Bien substation, 220kV substations and many important transmission lines.
In which, the 220kV Dien Bien substation and the 220kV Son La - Dien Bien power line have been deployed, expected to be completed in 2026.
Dien Bien currently has 23 medium and small hydropower plants operating with a total capacity of 326.8 MW.
According to the plan, the total capacity of all types of power sources in the period 2025 - 2030 will reach nearly 3,000 MW (of which wind and solar power account for a large proportion).
Currently, the province is implementing the construction of 4 hydropower projects, and has approved investment policies for 18 renewable energy projects with a total capacity of nearly 700 MW.

At the working session, leaders of Dien Bien province proposed that the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Vietnam Electricity Group and related units consider and approve the supplementation of Power Plan VIII in the province.
Specifically, supplementing the capacity target of solar power projects in the period 2026 - 2035 to reach 8,622 MW. Supplementing the capacity of wind power projects in the period 2026 - 2030 to 1,398 MW.
At the same time, propose a large-scale centralized BESS energy storage system of about 6,000 - 8,000 MW to serve system dispatch and provide auxiliary services.
The province also proposed to approve the addition of power grid infrastructure, including: 1 500kV substation, 2 220kV substations, 2 500kV power lines, 3 220kV power lines connecting stations in the area...
At the working session, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hoang Long acknowledged and highly appreciated the efforts and determination of Dien Bien province in implementing power grid projects according to the adjusted Power Plan VIII.
The Deputy Minister said that Dien Bien is a locality with great potential in developing energy types, especially renewable energy.
