World oil prices today
World gasoline and oil prices reversed to increase. At the end of yesterday's trading session (May 14), WTI and Brent oil prices increased by 0.15% and 0.09% respectively.
By this morning's session, both oil commodities continued to rise. At 7:50 am (Vietnam time), WTI oil price was at 101.98 USD/barrel, up 0.81 USD/barrel, equivalent to an increase of 0.82%; Brent oil was at 106.64 USD/barrel, almost unchanged compared to the closing price of the previous session.
In the previous session, WTI oil closed at 101.17 USD/barrel and opened this morning's session at 101.97 USD/barrel. Brent oil closed at 106.66 USD/barrel and opened the new session at 106.71 USD/barrel.
According to analysts, the conflict in the Middle East is beginning to have a negative impact on the US economy. The sharp increase in oil prices recently has caused fuel costs to escalate, increasing inflationary pressure and potentially affecting economic activity in the coming months. In that context, White House officials are trying to limit the economic and political consequences of the war with Iran.
After the meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, the White House said that the two leaders agreed that the Strait of Hormuz needs to be maintained open to ensure smooth energy flow.
China also expressed its desire to buy more oil from the US to reduce dependence on the Ormuz Strait. Previously, China stopped importing crude oil from the US from May 2025, after Washington imposed a 20% import tax within the framework of the trade war between the two countries.
The Strait of Hormuz has been almost disrupted since the conflict between the US and Iran broke out at the end of February. The Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said that about 30 ships have passed through this strait since the evening of May 13. However, this number is still much lower than the average of about 140 ships/day before the war.
Tehran is also said to be tightening control in the Strait of Hormuz, while reaching agreements with Iraq and Pakistan to transport oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the region.
