Clean energy-using buses exceed 42%
In just the first 4 months of 2026, the progress of green transformation in the transportation sector in Hanoi has recorded a clear acceleration. The rate of clean energy buses has exceeded 42% by the end of April, far exceeding the initial target set by the city.
Not only buses, the process of electrifying other types of public transport is also taking place strongly. Out of a total of 14,375 taxis operating in Hanoi, there are currently 8,992 electric vehicles, accounting for 60.47%.
For contract technology vehicles with fewer than 8 seats, the number of electric vehicles reached 23,819 vehicles, along with 105 hybrid vehicles out of a total of 52,180 vehicles, equivalent to about 45.2% of green vehicles. Notably, electric vehicles with a lifespan of less than 5 years account for nearly 70% of vehicles carrying out procedures for renewing and issuing new badges in the past, showing that the conversion trend is increasing rapidly.
Meanwhile, the group of technology motorbikes is still transforming more slowly. Currently, there are only 13,311 electric vehicles out of a total of 126,526 technology motorbike taxis, reaching about 10.52%.
People expect green transformation to happen faster
Real-world records show that electric buses and electric taxis are receiving positive feedback from Hanoi residents thanks to their smoothness, cleanliness and reduced noise compared to vehicles using internal combustion engines.
Regularly traveling by electric bus from Ha Dong to the city center, Ms. Nguyen Thu Hang (Ha Dong ward) said that the current travel experience is "much more pleasant" than before.
Electric buses are usually clean, quiet, have stable air conditioning, and no longer smell of oil or smoke as before. If the electric bus network is more widespread, I am willing to abandon my personal car to go to work every day," Ms. Hang said.
Similarly, Mr. Tran Duc Minh (Cau Giay ward) - who regularly uses technology taxis - believes that the rapid increase in the number of electric taxis makes calling a car more convenient.
“I completely switched to calling an electric taxi every day, picking up and dropping off children for extra classes also booked an electric car through the app. Taking an electric taxi is quite comfortable, the car operates smoothly and has no smell of gasoline or oil. The most important thing is the feeling that I am contributing to reducing pollution for the city” - Mr. Minh shared.
Despite recording positive results, Hanoi still has a significant gap to achieve the goal of all buses and taxis switching to green energy by 2030.
According to the Hanoi City People's Council Urban Committee, the biggest difficulty currently is investment capital. The capital demand for converting green buses of transport units is estimated at about 9,965 billion VND, of which the 2026-2030 period alone needs about 5,331 billion VND. Meanwhile, the equity capital of the Hanoi Development Investment Fund is currently only about 3,820 billion VND and still has to be lent in many other fields.
In addition to financial pressure, the city also needs to solve the problem of electricity charging infrastructure, common technical standards between operating units and a roadmap for rearranging the bus network in accordance with the low-emission zone construction plan.
The Urban Committee proposed that the Hanoi People's Committee soon issue a mechanism to support loan interest for businesses investing in green vehicles, and at the same time develop unified standards for charging stations and battery exchange stations to avoid fragmented and wasteful investment.
With the current pace of transformation, green transportation in Hanoi is showing clear positive signs. However, for the goal of electrifying all public transport to become a reality, the city will need more major boosts in capital, infrastructure and support policies in the coming time.
