World oil prices today
World gasoline and oil prices simultaneously fell sharply. At 7:56 am (Vietnam time), WTI oil price was at 80.94 USD/barrel, down 3.94 USD/barrel, equivalent to a decrease of 4.60%. WTI oil price closed the previous trading session at 84.88 USD/barrel and opened the weekend session at 81.95 USD/barrel.
Brent oil price was at 83.95 USD/barrel, down 3.38 USD/barrel, equivalent to a decrease of 3.87%. Brent oil price ended the previous trading session at 97.33 USD/barrel and opened the weekend session at 84.04 USD/barrel.
At the end of the last trading session of last week, Brent oil prices fell to their lowest level since the beginning of March, while WTI oil hit its lowest level since April, as traders increasingly believed that the US and Iran would reach a peace agreement.
Last week, US President Donald Trump said he had canceled plans to attack Iran because negotiations with Tehran and countries in the region had made significant progress. However, he did not disclose the specific content that the parties had agreed on. Previously, Mr. Trump repeatedly affirmed that the US is moving closer to an agreement with Iran.
In the early morning of June 15, President Donald Trump announced on the social network Truth Social that the Strait of Hormuz would reopen on June 19 after the US and Iran signed an agreement. "With the opening of the strait immediately after the agreement was signed on June 19 to serve mine clearance operations, oil will again circulate at both ends of this maritime route, bringing benefits to the region and the world," Mr. Trump wrote.
According to experts, the main reason for the drop in oil prices is that there is a memorandum of understanding agreement between Iran and the US. Iran said it is considering the political, legal and technical aspects of the draft to finalize the final document, which is expected to pave the way for ending nearly 4 months of military tension between the US, Israel and Iran.
Analysts believe that positive signals from the negotiation process continue to dominate market sentiment, strengthening expectations that the US and Iran will eventually reach an agreement, thereby helping the Strait of Hormuz to soon return to normal operation.
However, experts also note that global oil inventories are still low and may continue to decline. Even if the US and Iran reach an agreement, the market still needs more time to fully restore oil flows and the global energy supply chain.
