Early summer already broke the electricity consumption record of 2025
In the first 5 months of 2026, electricity demand increased sharply due to early and prolonged heat. At the end of May, the national power system recorded peak capacity of about 58,000 MW and consumption output reached 1.2 billion kWh/day, increasing by 5.6% and 9.5% respectively compared to the record of 2025. Total electricity output of the whole system reached 138.9 billion kWh, an increase of 8.9% compared to the same period last year.
According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the National Power System and Electricity Market Operation Company (NSMO), the growth rate of electricity load in 2026 is closely following operating scenarios. It is expected that for the whole year, electricity output will reach about 352.4 billion kWh, an increase of 9.1% compared to 2025. Notably, the North consumes up to 630 million kWh/day, with peak capacity reaching 30,000 MW, equivalent to the need to supplement electricity sources equal to the capacity of a Hoa Binh hydropower plant each year.

Faced with the pressure of continued high electricity demand and the risk of El Nino phenomenon from mid-2026 to 2027, EVN said that it has proactively coordinated with NSMO to operate reservoirs, maintain stable operation of power plants and prepare supplies for the dry season. Power generation units have reviewed and overcome incidents, and stored water in hydropower reservoirs appropriately to ensure safe and continuous power supply for socio-economic development. At gold shops on Cau Giay street, the number of customers coming to buy increased sharply but was coordinated orderly, and no jostling occurred. Many people took advantage of buying gold rings from 0.5 taels to a few taels to accumulate wealth when prices decreased. Some customers who bought large quantities had to wait to receive goods in the afternoon of the same day or the next day due to strong demand. See more...
