In recent days, some unseasonal rains have occurred in the southern provinces and cities. In Can Tho, due to the complicated weather, many farmers are busy monitoring and harvesting agricultural products to avoid damage.
With 3.5 hectares of Dai Thom 8 rice in the ripening stage, Ms. Ho Thi Nhien (Thoi Lai district, Can Tho city) rented a harvester to deliver to traders. Ms. Nhien said that there has not been any unseasonal rain in the area where she is farming. However, the weather has been quite gloomy these past few days, with cold air at night and early morning. To reduce risks and get a good price from traders, this farmer immediately sold the rice.
In the 2024-2025 winter-spring rice crop, Ms. Nhien estimates that she will harvest 900 kg - 1 ton of rice per 1,000 m2. After deducting all costs of agricultural materials and labor, her family will earn about 1.5 million VND per 1,000 m2, lower than last year's winter-spring crop due to lower rice prices.

While harvesting 1 hectare of Dai Thom 8 rice, Mr. Le Chi Tam (Binh Thuy District, Can Tho City) shared that the current rice price is at 6,800 VND/kg, nearly 1,000 VND/kg lower than the same time last year. Due to concerns about the impact of unseasonal rains on productivity, Mr. Tam received a deposit and harvested the rice early to deliver to traders.
“Following the weather forecast, the South has recently seen some unseasonal rains. The locality has not been affected yet, but to reduce unnecessary risks, especially when the rice is ripe, I sold to traders early,” Mr. Tam shared.

Given the current weather conditions, Ms. Pham Thuy Kieu (Binh Thuy District, Can Tho City) is actively monitoring forecasts and regularly checking to protect agricultural products. With 0.5 hectares of watermelons just starting to bear fruit, Ms. Kieu said that this is an important time that determines the yield and quality of the melons.
“Because of the late planting, the watermelons only produce small fruits. We are selecting the good ones to ensure productivity. In addition to increasing care, I have also proactively arranged pumps in the fields to be able to drain water in time when it rains heavily. Between the rows of watermelons, I also dig small trenches to prevent waterlogging,” said Ms. Kieu.

According to the weather forecast from the Southern Hydrometeorological Station, unseasonal rains will occur due to an equatorial low pressure trough operating over the southern sea from the night of February 11 to February 14.
The weather is forecast to be sunny again after February 14, when this low pressure trough will gradually lower its axis and weaken. The weather will remain dry. The cold continental high pressure is moving east and gradually weakening; around February 12-13, it is likely to strengthen again, then stabilize and gradually weaken.
The unseasonal rain is forecast to gradually decrease and the weather will be hot again. During the middle and last weeks of February, the cold air will still be quite strong but the cold air will gradually increase less.
